Commentary

2 Kings, chapter 21, tells of rule of the evil king Manasseh over the southern Kingdom of Judah from 687 to 643 BC. He was the son and heir of Hezekiah, a king who trusted God.

The chapter records that Manasseh was an evil king who reversed the good religious policies of his father. Manasseh had high places and altars to foreign gods built. Because of this trust in other gods, 2 Kings 21:13 records that God chose to bring judgement against Judah

13 I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab; and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. edit

2 Chronicles 33 records that Manasseh was captured by the Assyrian armies and taken prisoner, but repented and so was restored by God to his place as king of Judah.

Manasseh was succeeded by Amon.
