Acts 7 tell the story of the murder of the early Christian Stephen. His death caused believers to flee Jerusalem, with the result that the faith spread.
Stephen was stoned to death because of accusations of blasphemy. Before his stoning he was brought before the Sanhedrin, where he gave a speech in his defence. Key features of this speech include the Jewish leaders' ongoing rejection of God's prophets throughout Israel's history, culminating now in their rejection of Jesus, God's righteous one. Acts 8:1 and Acts 8:4 reveal that this persecution was the catalyst for the expansion of the early church.
