Ekklesia (Ecclessia / Εκκλησια) is a Koine Greek word meaning "gathering" or "assembly". When referring to the gathering of Christian believers it is translated as "church".
[edit] Use in the New Testament
In the New Testament the word is translated as "church". The word means a body of faithful Christians. It can be used to include not merely the Christians of a particular area, but also to the whole body of Christians, but alive and dead.
The disciples of a single locality are often referred to in the New Testament as a church (Revelation 2:18, Romans 16:4, Acts 9:31). Paul even applies the term to disciples belonging to a single household (Romans 16:5, 1 Corinthians 16:19, Colossians 4:15, Philemon 1:2).
The global use of the word can be seen from its very first appearance in Mark 14:49 and later in Ephesians 5:25-27.
