Egypt is a mostly desert-containing large country in Northern Africa that the River Nile flows through. In the time of Moses, the Israelites were slaves in Egypt. Today, most of the people in Egypt are Muslims, but a significant minority belong to the Coptic Church. Persecution of Christians occurs commonly in Egypt. HistoryEgypt in the Old TestamentOne of the great ancient civilizations arose in Egypt. By the time of Abraham, Egypt was a flourishing and powerful nation. In the books of Genesis and Exodus the Israelites story of slavery in Egypt is told. The great-grandson of Abraham, Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt. However, after interpreting the Pharoah's dreams, Joseph became the governor of Egypt, second only to the Pharoah himself. Following these events, famine struck the land and the brothers of Joseph travelled to Egypt, ultimately moving into the land of Goshen in the delta of the Nile River. In time, the dynasty changed, and the new Pharoah enslaved the Israelites. For hundreds of years the people were slaves until God raised up Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
