He said, "Now take your son, your only son, whom you love, even Isaac, and go into the land of Moriah. Offer him there for a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of."

Commentary

Didn't Abraham have two sons, Isaac and Ishmael? Here God is emphasizing that Isaac is the only son of promise, the inheritor. Isaac is the only one to carry the line of salvation, given by God.

Hebrew ויאמר קח־נא את־בנך את־יחידך אשר־אהבת את־יצחק ולך־לך אל־ארץ המריה והעלהו שם לעלה על אחד ההרים אשר אמר אליך׃
Greek και ειπεν λαβε τον υιον σου τον αγαπητον ον ηγαπησας τον ισαακ και πορευθητι εις την γην την υψηλην και ανενεγκον αυτον εκει εις ολοκαρπωσιν εφ' εν των ορεων ων αν σοι
Latin Ait illi : Tolle filium tuum unigenitum, quem diligis, Isaac, et vade in terram visionis, atque ibi offeres eum in holocaustum super unum montium quem monstravero tibi.
KJV And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
