Hi Graham, How are you? I am wondering if we should try to change our domain name to WikiChristian.org and forward the wikichristian.com to that domain since it makes more sense since we want to keep it a non-commercial project. Hi Graham, Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing with all the lyrics. In order to better organize the information in the wiki, it is a good idea to categorize the pages so that the system automatically creates alphabetical lists. All we have to do is to type <nowiki>[[Category:type]]</nowiki> at the bottom of the page. For example, the songs category pages should have <nowiki>[[category:songs]]</nowiki>. Also, there are some dead end pages that do not have any link and the best way to avoid creating dead end pages is by categories and templates. To create a new template, just type <nowiki>{{template name}}</nowiki> and edit the template page with the link created. Thanks for the understanding. --[[User:Prab]]

:Hi Prab, Yep - it's a good idea to use templates and categories. Makes sense to me. However, I still like to have the index and contents pages under the control of the users rather than at the mercy of an automated system. Thanks --Graham

Hi Graham, Thanks for the message in my user page. I think we can do both. Actually, the system does a good job in organizing the info alphabetically but giving the control to the users as well makes sense and we will continue both. Thanks. -Prab
==writing in first person==
Hi Graham (my name also happens to be Graham), I was just reading through some of the articles and I notice that frequently in the articles you write you use first person voice liberally. Not that I object to this in general, it's definitely a great tool for communicating Christian truth. However, since this is an Encyclopedia, perhaps we should consider using a more objective (third person) voice as much as possible? In articles and opinions, of course, first person is entirely acceptable. But in the more historical and factual entries, I wonder whether the first person voice comes off as scholarly or merely as "preachy," thus turning off potential believers and causing WikiChristian to be viewed as "just another evangelist website." Again, not that I object to your writing style in general, I think you're doing a great thing by devoting so much of your time to this project! [[User:Avertist|Avertist]] 09:07, 23 Apr 2005 (PDT)

:Hi Avertis. I've really enjoyed learning from your articles. You're doing a great job.
:It's quite true that I do write opinions often. I try to make it clear that it is an opinion - which is why I write my name next to the article - so that a user can skip stuff I write if they don't want to read opinions, or so they can click on my name and read my background and understand my biases. You're also right in saying that using the first person doesn't always come off as scholarly. But when discussing Christianity, does it always have to be scholarly? Can experience or a testimony or even just a gut feeling be as worthwhile?
:I guess I disagree with you on one point. You say that this is an Encyclopedia. My hope is that this is not only an encyclopedia - if it were only an encyclopedia then why not just write in Wikipedia? I hope this is a place where people can write their views and opinions including their understanding of history. The way I am going to write about about the Reformation is probably going to be quite different than the way a Roman Catholic would write about the Reformation, or again different from the way an atheist would write about it. Although there are historical facts involved, I think there will usually be a slant in one direction or another. I think it is best to allow multiple articles on the history of the reformation (or any other topic). Perhaps there should be the main article that is dry and factual only, but I think it is fine also for there to be lots of other articles which tend to have a slant in one way or another. Sometimes that will be "preachy" but hopefully at least it will be open for dialogue, discussion and rebuttal. I also don't think making this a purely factual Encyclopedia is likely to help brng people to Christ. Maybe I'm wrong - I'd be interested to know if anyone has been significantly drawn to Jesus by looking up information about Christianity on wikipedia.
:If you look at the [[baptism]] page you'll see that I've written an article there which is clearly my own opinion. Obviously there will be people who have different opinions on this topic. I think it would be great if other people add links for new articles where they can explain their alternate views. Even the writer of Easton's Bible Dictionary is pretty biased (and this is supposed to be a dictionary which I would imagine shouldn't be biased). If you read [[Bible Dictionary: Baptism]] you'll see that there is clearly a particular point being pushed.
:What you say is important though. I shouldn't be writing things that turn people away from Christ - I guess what I want to do is write things that say what I believe and challenge people to think about what they believe - be it the same or different from my belief. Sometimes I fail at that task. If you let me know which comments I make in which articles that are specifically preachy and that you think would really offend people, let me know and I'll try and fix them up. Your brother in Christ, --Graham Grove

::Hi Graham, I worry that I may have overstated the problem in my first post. In the vast majority of your articles I don't see anything to worry about. But take, for instance, in the conclusion section of [[An overview of the main denominations and the history of the Christian Church (By G.G.)]]. The rest of the article is mostly factual, but the conclusion is definitely composed mostly of opinion. It's an opinion I share completely, so I'm not objecting to the content of it, but it seems to me that the best place for that section would be in a separate article discussing your opinion on the unity of the Church, etc. And though it does not sound particularly preachy to me, I can almost guarantee you that some of my atheist/agnostic friends would read it as trying to "explain away" the "fact" that Christianity just "can't figure itself out," or something to that effect. Would minor reorganizations like this actually convert them? Probably not, but it would remove that small objection they may have.
::I completely agree that Wikichristian should be much more than a dry encyclopedia; my concern is that the division between fact and opinion might become blurred if we are not careful about this. [[User:Avertist|Avertist]] 00:26, 24 Apr 2005 (PDT)

:::Thanks Avertis. I think you were quite right - that was out of place in an article that probably should have remained neutral and factual. I've moved my conclusion into a separate article. Thanks for the advice. --Graham Grove, 24 April

::Hi Graham, I'm glad we agreed on this :). On a semi-related note, I thought more about what you said about wikipedia being the place for a "dry encyclopedia" and I thought that perhaps just to save time and effort, we could import articles en masse to wikichristian on historical and factual matters. Since wikipedia articles are generally pretty reliable, this way we'll be able to concentrate more of our efforts on dialogue and writing opinion articles (which I agree should be the core of wikichristian). Since you're one of the "main guys" here, I figured I'd ask your thoughts before I started doing it a bunch. But just so you can get an idea of what I mean, I imported the [[Arianism]] article from wikipedia on top of my old entry. As helpful as it is to me to write up my own short explanations of things, I think this would probably be more efficient and beneficial to wikichristian as a whole. I'm interested to know your thoughts. [[User:Avertist|Avertist]] 09:39, 24 Apr 2005 (PDT)

:::G'day Avertist. Go for it, transfer any articles you think a worth transferring. I've noticed sometimes that I've got to have my thinking hat on when reading articles from Wikipedia. For instance, in the article on Christianity, it has a list of famous Christians, one of whom is Joseph Smith. He's the founder of the Mormon religion, so I don't think it is accurate to say he is a famous Christian. Certainly he was a very influential man and a famous religious leader who has had a major impact in history, but I think most Christians would agree that he should be left off a list of famous Christians. In general though, like you've suggested, Wikipedia is pretty reliable and thorough, so go for it and transfer away. {{unsigned|Graham grove}}

==vandalism==
I have noticed that you have some users who are constantly editing the articles to say nasty things. They switch words, screw up spelling so that links do not work, and seem to be somewhat of an annoyance. Is there any way to stop this? It may be that this is the downside to a website like this where users can freely edit each other's work. [[User:JordanBarrett|JordanBarrett]] 13:42, 28 July 2005 (PDT)

:Yep, that tends to happen a lot. When Prab initially set up the site, that happened a lot and so we protected most of the pages so that only sysops could edit them. Then the vandalism stopped for a time and we unprotected most the pages. It seems to occur periodically again - and it only seems to be coming from one person. There probably is some way of stopping it, but I'm not an expert at wikis so I'm unfamiliar with how to stop it. I know the set up for [[Theopedia]] is that only people with user names can edit pages - perhaps that is the best way around the problem. You could talk to [[User:Prab|Prab]] about the problems if you want. --Graham

Dear Graham, I'd like to invite you to join the RWiki Yahoo Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rwiki/. Here's my preliminary description of the group:
:This group is an informal association of administrators of religiously-based wikis. Most of us are using MediaWiki, but administrators of other wiki engines are also invited to join.
We envision this as a low-volume list where administrators of religiously rooted wiki communities can trade tips and ideas, work together to fight spambots and vandals, and so on.

RWiki is sponsored by OrthodoxWiki (http://www.orthodoxwiki.org). It is open to wikis based in all "recognized" religious communities. This generally does not include NRMs or groups commonly described as "cults."

The archives of this list are kept private, and membership is restricted to those who genuinely qualify for this kind of group. Please apply with the name and URL of your wiki, as well as a description of your role in managing it.
Hi, I am the creator of the new Bible encyclopedia wiki based in the United States called, [http://wikible.org Wikible]. I noticed that this site is getting hammered all the time with spam. I was just curious what kind of spam protection you are using? I am using the Bad Behavior mediawiki extension at my site. Also, I've noticed this site is using a very old version of MediaWiki. perhaps a upgrade to the latest stable version, 1.5.6 (as of this post), would help curb that somewhat. As you know, spammers will try to use vulnerabilities in software to their advantage, and it would probably help to upgrade.
Hey, Graham! Sorry if I shouldn't have deleted that page. Do you want me to undelete it, or will you do that, or what? I just figured that, since the overview page was actually ''smaller'' than the main page, it would just be easier to have it all on one page. I thought that if the article ever ''did'' get bigger, then the overview page could simply be created again. Otherwise, with the article as it is, an overview page seems, at least to me, to just take up database space and clutter up the article. But either way I won't delete any more overview pages again, if you guys don't want me to :-)
:No problems. That's fine what you did. I think that your approach to delete the page was fine; we can always recreate it later if need be. I'd prefer you not to delete the overview articles, but I know that Tom has a different point of view. You do what you think is best. Keep in mind that there are a lot of different view points in Christianity, and at least the system with overviews allows for people to contribute either to the overview, or alternatively to create opinion style articles. --[[User:Graham grove|Graham grove]] 17:12, 22 October 2006 (EST)
I assume Prab is the only one with access to the server, so he just needs to change the bolded line from <code>= true;</code> to <code>= false;</code>. Thanks [[User:Ymmotrojam|Tom]] for the changes to the server and [[User:P.B. Pilhet|P.B. Pilhet]] for the suggestion. I see Graham noted that he is unable to some pages due to the spam blocker. So, it may be helpful to post what exactly is the error message so that we can look into it further. I noticed that it is not accepting page break <nowiki> br</nowiki>. To remove the html br command, just copy the content to note pad, use search replace to remove the <nowiki> html start tag br html end tag </nowiki>. (I was not able to use the open and close arrow!, hope you understand). Paste the content back in the wiki. --[[User:Prab|Prab]] 14:05, 21 December 2006 (EST)
1:1 - In the Beginning, God made the [[Heaven|Heavens]] and Earth, down to the last particle.
1:4 - So God stepped back and took a look at the light, and it was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.

1:5 - God said when it was light, that would be called daytime and when it's dark, it would be called night. So from morning to night was the first day.

1:6 - The Next Day, God said "Sky, appear in the middle of the waters, and separate water from water!" and it happened.
1:7 - God made the sky, and just like he said, it was in the middle of the waters, and it separated water from water.

"Dost thou desire to study to advantage? Consult [[Go]]d more than books, and ask Him humbly to make thee understand what thou readest. Go from time to time to be refreshed at the feet of [[Christ]], under His [[Cross]]. Some moments of repose there give fresh vigor and new light: interrupt thy study by short but fervent supplications."

This is a Study Book, yet it has been our hope to make the book equally interesting for mere reading.

Having been planned as a Study Book, paragraphs are to be paid attention to, not pages; it is indexed at the back on this plan. Those who do not know Hebrew and Greek, and yet wish to test its every point, will find much help in doing this in Young's Analytical Concordance to the [[Holy Bible]], especially in editions from the seventh onward, because of the valuable Index-Lexicons at the end of the volume, informing the student of the number of times any certain Greek or Hebrew word occurs in the Bible and of all its various translations.

Some years ago, Mrs. Alexander Whyte, wife of the late Principal Whyte of New College, Edinburgh, Scotland, became interested in the Lessons, and appealed to Dr. Rendel Harris for an opinion of them from his point of scholarship, or of some other able critic. Dr. Harris referred Mrs. Whyte to Dr. A. Mingana, Professor of Arabic at Manchester University, England, and Curator of Oriental Manuscripts in the John Rylands Library, which contains a wealth of such matter.

Dr. Mingana has read carefully through the Lessons of the book, and given me the benefit of his criticisms, which, for the most part, are very encouraging. In issuing this second edition, it has seemed well to add in footnotes the substance of his comments. I have not a personal acquaintance with this most obliging and helpful gentleman, but I hope that he will, as well as Mrs. Whyte, accept this acknowledgment of valuable help as the best return I am able at present to make. I understand that Dr. Mingana's name is one that stands high in rank among philologists and Orientalists. He is a voluminous writer for theological and other journals, and the author of a Syriac Grammar; of two volumes on Syriac Sources; a volume on The Ancient Koran; two volumes on The Odes and [[Psalms]] of Solomon; a work on Early Judeo-Christian Documents in the John Rylands Library, and of several other books.

While we in no wise question the authority and inviolability of the original text of the Bible, we hold that the present English translation of [[Genesis]] 3:16, "Thy desire shall be to thy husband," is erroneous, and proved incorrect by the ancient versions. Therefore the interpretation of St. Paul's rules regarding the conduct and treatment of women, since based on the erroneous translation, is incorrect.

A few persons will, of course, resign a measure of faith unless the traditional interpretation is left undisturbed. This cannot be helped. We must continually improve in our understanding of God's will, and this necessitates a continual improvement in our interpretation of God's Word. So the question is, --Shall the Church change its present treatment of women, or its interpretation of [[St. Paul]]? Its present course of inconsistency, in teaching Paul one way, and treating women in a more honoring way, is mischievous:

(1) The Church itself, thereby, sets an example of defiance of the authority of the Holy Bible.

(2) To explain Paul by apologizing for Paul's faulty rabbinical logic involves the expositor in an attack on the inspiration of the Holy Bible (see Lesson 46).

(3) If women must suffer domestic, legislative and ecclesiastical disabilities because [[Eve]] sinned, then must the Church harbor the appalling doctrine that Christ did not atone for all sin, because so long as the Church maintains these disabilities, the inevitable conclusion in the average mind will be the same as Tertullian's,—"God's verdict on the sex still holds good, and the sex's guilt must still hold also."

(4) At no point is [[faith]] in the entire Bible being so viciously and successfully attacked today as at the point of the "woman question," and the Church so far attempts no defense here of her children. It assumes that the interests of merely a few ambitious women are involved, whereas the very fundamentals of our faith are at stake.

Hi Graham, How are you? I am wondering if we should try to change our domain name to WikiChristian.org and forward the wikichristian.com to that domain since it makes more sense since we want to keep it a non-commercial project. We can also consider registering a [[not for profit organization]] as we grow. Please share your thoughts on this. We already have both the domains with us. Thanks. -Prab

:Hi Prab, Sure. I don't really know what the difference between .com and .org is - but if you think there is a good reason for the change, go for it. --Graham

Thanks. -Prab
Hello, Graham. Thank you for the warm welcome to WikiChristian. ==writing in first person==

:::G'day Avertist. Go for it, transfer any articles you think a worth transferring. I've noticed sometimes that I've got to have my thinking hat on when reading articles from Wikipedia. For instance, in the article on Christianity, it has a list of famous Christians, one of whom is Joseph Smith. He's the founder of the Mormon religion, so I don't think it is accurate to say he is a famous Christian. Certainly he was a very influential man and a famous religious leader who has had a major impact in history, but I think most Christians would agree that he should be left off a list of famous Christians. In general though, like you've suggested, Wikipedia is pretty reliable and thorough, so go for it and transfer away. {{unsigned|Graham grove}}
==vandalism==

--Graham
== Invitation to RWiki Yahoo Group ==

Thanks. -Prab
==writing in first person==

:::G'day Avertist. Go for it, transfer any articles you think a worth transferring. I've noticed sometimes that I've got to have my thinking hat on when reading articles from Wikipedia. For instance, in the article on Christianity, it has a list of famous Christians, one of whom is Joseph Smith. He's the founder of the Mormon religion, so I don't think it is accurate to say he is a famous Christian. Certainly he was a very influential man and a famous religious leader who has had a major impact in history, but I think most Christians would agree that he should be left off a list of famous Christians. In general though, like you've suggested, Wikipedia is pretty reliable and thorough, so go for it and transfer away. {{unsigned|Graham grove}}

==vandalism==

--Graham
:G'day and welcome Phatcat68. Thanks for adding to the directory of churches. Feel free to create and edit other articles if you want to. A while back we had a lot of trouble with vandalism (and the only way we could stop it and make the vandals go away was to protect all the pages). Hopefully most pages have now been unprotected and if we haven't unprotected them all it is only because of forgetfulness. If you find one that is protected, give me a yell, and I'll unprotect it. --[[User:Graham grove|Graham grove]] 22:28, 29 Sep 2005 (EDT)
== Invitation to RWiki Yahoo Group ==

Have a good day, and keep serving the savior! --[[User:Ymmotrojam|Ymmotrojam]] 04:51, 22 Jan 2006 (EST)
Hey, Graham! Thanks for your support of me being a sysop. I agree with you in that it would be a good thing for admins to have varying beliefs, as long as they all accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. ==Deletion of C.S. Lewis (overview)==

Since a lot of the vandalism is coming from the same people (I think), we might also want to install the [http://wiki.evernex.com/index.php?title=Installing_CheckUser Check User] special extension, which will allow us to see which IP addresses an editor is using, so we can effectively ban him/her. -- [[User:P.B.
Thanks. -Prab

Thanks. -Prab
==writing in first person==

:::G'day Avertist. Go for it, transfer any articles you think a worth transferring. I've noticed sometimes that I've got to have my thinking hat on when reading articles from Wikipedia. For instance, in the article on Christianity, it has a list of famous Christians, one of whom is Joseph Smith. He's the founder of the Mormon religion, so I don't think it is accurate to say he is a famous Christian. Certainly he was a very influential man and a famous religious leader who has had a major impact in history, but I think most Christians would agree that he should be left off a list of famous Christians. In general though, like you've suggested, Wikipedia is pretty reliable and thorough, so go for it and transfer away. {{unsigned|Graham grove}}

==vandalism==

Sir James Paul: created

'''Abide with Me''' is a christian hymn written by [[Henry Lyte]].

== Words ==
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word;
But as Thou dwell’st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings,
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea—
Come, Friend of sinners, and thus bide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile;
And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Sir James Paul: Brought over from wikipedia

:''There is also a [[Theophilus of Alexandria]]'' (''c.'' A.D. 412).
----
'''Theophilus''', [[Patriarch of Antioch]] ([[Eusebius of Caesarea|Eusebius]] ''Ecclesiastical History'' iv. 20; [[Jerome]] ''Ep. ad Algas. quaest.'' 6), succeeded [[Eros of Antioch|Eros]] c. [[169]], and was succeeded by [[Maximus of Antioch|Maximus I]] c.[[183]], according to Clinton (''Fasti Romani''), but these dates are only approximations. His death probably occurred between 183 - 185 (Lightfoot, ''S. Ignatius'', vol. ii. p. 166).

We gather from his writings that he was born a pagan, not far from the [[Tigris]] and [[Euphrates]], and was led to embrace Christianity by studying the Holy Scriptures, especially the prophetical books (''Apologia ad Autolycum'' i. 14, ii. 24). He makes no reference to his office in his existing writings, nor is any other fact in his life recorded. Eusebius, however, speaks of the zeal which he and the other chief shepherds displayed in driving away the heretics who were attacking Christ's flock, with special mention of his work against [[Marcion]] (''Ecclesiastical History'' iv. 24). He made contributions to the departments of [[Christianity|Christian]] literature, polemics, exegetics, and apologetics. Dr. Sanday describes him as "one of the precursors of that group of writers who, from [[Irenaeus]] to [[Cyprian]], not only break the obscurity which rests on the earliest history of the Christian church, but alike in the East and in the West carry it to the front in literary eminence, and distance all their heathen contemporaries" (''Studia Biblica'', p. 90). Eusebius and Jerome mention numerous works of Theophilus existing in their time. They are:
# the existing ''Apologia'' addressed to Autolycus;
# a work against the heresy of [[Hermogenes]];
# against that of Marcion;
# some catechetical writings;
# [[Jerome]] also mentions having read some commentaries on the gospel and on Proverbs, which bore Theophilus's name, but which he regarded as inconsistent with the elegance and style of his other works.

===The ''Apologia ad Autolycum''===
The one undoubted extant work of Theophilus is his ''Apologia ad Autolycum'', in three books. Its ostensible object is to convince a pagan friend, Autolycus, a man of great learning and an earnest seeker after truth, of the divine authority of the Christian religion, while at the same time he exhibits the falsehood and absurdity of paganism. His arguments, drawn almost entirely from the [[Old Testament]], with but very scanty references to the [[New Testament]], are largely chronological. He makes the truth of Christianity depend on his demonstration that the books of the Old Testament were long anterior to the writings of the Greeks and were divinely inspired. Whatever truth the pagan authors contain he regards as borrowed from Moses and the prophets, who alone declare God's revelation to man. He contrasts the perfect consistency of the divine oracles, which he regards as a convincing proof of their inspiration, with the inconsistencies of the [[paganism|pagan]] [[philosophers]]. He contrasts the account of the creation of the universe and of man, on which, together with the history contained in the earlier chapters of [[Genesis]], he comments at great length but with singularly little intelligence, with the statements of [[Plato]], "reputed the wisest of all the Greeks" (iii. 15, 16), of [[Aratus]], who had the insight to assert that the earth was spherical (ii. 32, iii. 2), and other Greek writers on whom he pours contempt as mere ignorant retailers of stolen goods. He supplies a series of dates, beginning with [[Adam and Eve|Adam]] and ending with [[Marcus Aurelius]], who had died shortly before he wrote, thus dating this work to the years of the reign of [[Commodus]]. Theophilus regards the [[Sibylline books]] that were still in Rome as authentic and inspired productions, quoting the [[Sibylline oracles]] (scholars dispute that these are the same) largely as declaring the same truths with the prophets. The omission by the Greeks of all mention of the Old Testament from which they draw all their wisdom, is ascribed to a self-chosen blindness in refusing to recognize the only God and in persecuting the followers of the only fountain of truth (iii. 30 and following). He can recognize in them no aspirations after the divine life, no earnest gropings after truth, no gleams of the all-illumining light. The pagan religion was a mere worship of idols, bearing the names of dead men. Almost the only point in which he will allow the pagan writers to be in harmony with revealed truth is in the doctrine of retribution and punishment after death for sins committed in life (ii. 37, 38). [[Henry Wace]] believes "the literary character of the ''Apologia'' deserves commendation. The style is characterized by dignity and refinement. It is clear and forcible. The diction is pure and well chosen. Theophilus also displays wide and multifarious though superficial reading, and a familiar acquaintance with the most celebrated Greek writers. His quotations are numerous and varied." However, Henry Chadwick in his ''The Early Church'' (London, 1967) describes the ''Apologia'' as "a rambling defence of Christianity". Donaldson is likewise harsh in his ''History of Christian Literature'', pointing out Theophilus's many blunders, which include misquoting Plato several times (iii. 6, 16), ranking [[Zopyrus]] among the Greeks (iii. 26), and speaking of [[Pausanias (general)|Pausanias]] as having only run a risk of starvation instead of being actually starved to death in the temple of [[Minerva]].

Theophilus's critical powers were not above his age. He adopts [[Herodotus]]'s derivation (ii. 52) of qeus from tiqhmi, since God set all things in order, comparing with it that of Plato (''Crataeus'' 397C) from qeein, because the Deity is ever in motion (''Apologia'' i. 4). He asserts that Satan is called the dragon (Greek ''drakon'') on account of his having revolted ''apode'''''draken'''''ai'' from God (ii. 28), and traces the [[Bacchanalia]]n cry "Evoe" to the name of [[Adam and Eve|Eve]] as the first sinner (ibid.). His physical theories are equally embarrassing. He ridicules those who maintain the spherical form of the earth (ii. 32) and asserts that it is a flat surface covered by the heavens as by a domical vault (ii. 13). His [[exegesis]] is based on allegories usually of the most arbitrary character. He makes no attempt to determine the real meaning of a passage, but seeks to find some recondite spiritual truth, a method which often leads him to great absurdities. He discovers the reason of blood coagulating on the surface of the ground in the divine word to [[Cain]] (Genesis 4:10-12), the earth struck with terror refusing to drink it in.

Theophilus's testimony to the Old Testament is copious. He quotes very largely from the [[Pentateuch]] and to a smaller extent from the other historical books. His references to [[Psalms]], [[Book of Proverbs|Proverbs]], [[Isaiah]], and [[Jerome]] are copious, and he quotes from [[Ezekiel]], [[Hosea]] and other minor prophets. His direct evidence respecting the canon of the New Testament does not go much beyond a few precepts from the Sermon on the Mount (iii. 13, 14), a possible quotation from Luke 18:27 (ii. 13), and quotations from [[Epistle to the Romans|Romans]], [[1 Corinthians]], and [[1 Timothy]]. More important is a distinct citation from the opening of the [[Gospel of John|Gospel of St. John]] (1:1-3), mentioning the evangelist by name, as one of the inspired men by whom the Holy Scriptures were written (ii. 22). The use of a metaphor found in [[2 Peter]] 1:19 bears on the date of that epistle. According to Eusebius, Theophilus quoted the [[Book of Revelation]] in his work against [[Hermogenes]]; a very precarious allusion has been seen in ii. 28, cf. Revelation 12:3, 7, etc. A full index of these and other possible references to the Old and New Testament is given by Otto (''Corp. Apol. Christ.'' ii. 353-355). Theophilus transcribes a considerable portion of Genesis chapters 1-3 with his own allegorizing comments upon the successive work of the creation week. The sun is the image of God; the moon of man, whose death and resurrection are prefigured by the monthly changes of that luminary. The first three days before the creation of the heavenly bodies are types of the [[Trinity]] -- the first place in Christian writings where that terminology is known to occur (ii. 15): i.e. "God, His Word and His Wisdom."

The silence regarding his ''Apology'' in the East is remarkable; we fail to find the work mentioned or quoted by Greek writers before the time of Eusebius. Several passages in the works of [[Irenaeus]] show an undoubted relationship to passages in one small section of the ''Apologia'' (Iren. v. 23, 1; Autol. ii. 25 init.: Iren. iv. 38, 1, iii. 23, 6; Autol. ii. 25: Iren. iii. 23, 6; Autol. ii. 25, 26), but [[Adolf Harnack|Harnack]] thinks it probable that the quotations, limited to two chapters, are not taken from the ''Apologia'', but from Theophilus's work against Marcion (cf. Möhler, Patr. p. 286; Otto, Corp. Apol. II. viii. p. 357; Donaldson, ''History of Christian Literature'' iii, 66). In the West there are a few references to the ''Autolycus''. It is quoted by [[Lactantius]] (Div. Inst. i. 23) under the title ''Liber de Temporibus ad Autolycum''. There is a passage first cited by Maranus in [[Novatian]] (''de Trin.'' c. 2) which shows great similarity to the language of Theophilus (''ad Autol.'' i. 3). In the next century the book is mentioned by [[Gennadius of Marseilles|Gennadius]] (c. 34) as "tres libelli de fide." He found them attributed to Theophilus of Alexandria, but the disparity of style caused him to question the authorship. The notice of Theophilus by Jerome has been already referred to. Dodwell found internal evidence, in the reference to existing persecutions and a supposed reference to [[Origen]] and his followers, for assigning the work to a younger Theophilus who perished in the reign of [[Septimius Severus]] (''Dissert. ad Irenaeus'' §§ 44, 50, pp. 170 ff. ed. 1689). His arguments have been carefully examined by [[Louis-Sébastien Le Nain de Tillemont|Tillemont]] (''Mém. eccl.'' iii. 612 notes), Cave (''Hist. Lit.'' i. 70), Donaldson (ii. 65), and Harnack (p. 287), and the received authorship fully established. Compare W. Sanday in ''Stud. Bibl.'' (Oxford, 1885), p. 89.

===Editions===
[[Jacques Paul Migne|Migne]]'s [[Patrologia Graeca|Patr. Gk.]] (t. vi. col. 1023-1168), and a small edition (Cambridge 1852) by [[W. G. Humphry]]. Otto's edition in the ''Corpus Apologet. Christ. Saec. Secund.'' vol. ii. (Jena, 1861) is by far the most complete and useful. English translation by [[Belty]] (Oxford 1722), Flower (London, 1860), and [[Marcus Dods (theologian)|Marcus Dods]] (Clark's [[Ante-Nicene Fathers|Ante-Nicene Library]]).
