{{summary | text=''Synopsis:'' Since the time of [[Jesus]], the church has played a role in the political world to varying degrees. Initially persecuted, it later became the state religion of the Roman Empire. It was Christians who brought about the end of slavery in the British Empire. In recent centuries its political power has decreased, although Christian voters and lobby-groups still bring pressure to politicians, especially in the [[United States of America]].
