"Justification by faith alone" is the teaching that a person is justified (that is, made right with God) through his faith only and not on the basis of good works.

All Christians agree that a person is justified by faith. The teaching that a person is justified by faith alone however is a specific Protestant teaching and was one of the key issues that lead to the Reformation. The doctrine is sometimes referrred to as "Sole Fide" which is Latin for "faith alone". Although Protestant churches teach that good works are not required for a sinner's justification, they do teach that justification by faith will always be accompanied by good works.
