Abortion can refer to either a miscarriage or a medical abortion. A miscarriage is a naturally occurring process when an embryo or fetus dies and is naturally expelled from the uterus. A medical abortion (or termination of pregnancy) is when a procedure is performed (usually by a doctor at the request of the woman) to kill the embryo or fetus and remove it from the uterus.

Legality
The legality of abortion around the world varies. Generally it has only become legal sometime within the last 50 years.
Australia
Abortion is legal only under the following circumstances: the baby is significantly malformed or the woman's health, either physically or emotionally, is under threat. In practice this means that an abortion can be performed quite easily, because all it requires is for the woman to say that her mental health is under great threat.
