The station broadcasts a Contemporary Christian music format. It is owned by Christian Hit Radio Inc., a not-for-profit, charitable-status corporation. The station was given approval granted its licence by the CRTC on 8 July 81996, 1996 to operate a new christian Christian music FM station at 99.1 MHz in Ottawa. CHRI-FM went live on Easter Sunday 30 March 1997 after broadcasting a pre-recorded test signal for three weeks.

Although CHRI-FM is clearly not a publicly traded company (ministry based), 's management team (currently led by Bill Stevens, Brock Tozer, Dianne Van Der Putten) still report reports to a board of directors, which reports to a voting membership. CHRI-FM has a general manager, a traffic manager, a ministry director, an accountant, a promotions coordinator, sales representatives, a fund-raiser, a producer, a handful of paid announcers, and several volunteer announcers, along with office and street team volunteers from the community.
