During the last few years of Jesus' earthly life, he travelled the country-side of Judea and Galilee (now modern-day Israel and Palestine) teaching the local people about God. With him travelled a number of followers or disciples. 4 separate, canonical written accounts of Jesus' life and teaching of this time survive today, and are included in the Bible as the 4 Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Other accounts, such as the Gospel of Thomas, are regarded as apocryphal, that is, of questionable authenticity and truth. Not only did Jesus teach about God's love and forgiveness, he also taught about his own identity and mission, revealing himself to be the Messiah, God's Son who was ushering in a new kingdom, the Kingdom of God. One of Jesus' most significant points was that it was only through him that a person could come to know God, and that this would be through the eventual suffering and death of Jesus himself. One of the most famous records of the teaching of Jesus is found in the Gospel of Matthew and is known as the Sermon on the Mount. In this discourse, Jesus taught his followers the ethics that those who have received God's mercy and grace will would live by. Calling upon his followers to "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48) , Jesus asked them to love not only their friends, but also their enemies, to repay evil with good, and to not to trust God, rather than seek material wealth but to trust God.
