The country is very poor, following decades of drought and war. Christianity is the major religion of the country, with about 60% of the population belonging to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Since 1991 there has been freedom for worship and witness (prior to this the Marxist regime persecuted Christians) and there has been huge growth in the Protestant church since then with now over 10 million Protestant Christians. There is an increasing Muslim minority.
