A recent phenomenon in the West has been the attrition of church membership in the general population with many children in the preceding generation not growing up going to church. This has left a large void of young adults, and more recently middle aged adults, in many churches. This cultural shift has brought youth ministry into the forefront of evangelism and outreach in many churches.
