Lamentations 1 Text (WEB)
  1. How the city sits solitary, that was full of people! She has become as a widow, who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces is become tributary!
  2. She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has none to comfort her: All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they are become her enemies.
  3. Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude; she dwells among the nations, she finds no rest: all her persecutors overtook her within the straits.
  4. The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly; all her gates are desolate, her priests do sigh: her virgins are afflicted, and she herself is in bitterness.
  5. Her adversaries are become the head, her enemies prosper; for Yahweh has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her young children are gone into captivity before the adversary.
  6. From the daughter of Zion all her majesty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
  7. Jerusalem remembers in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that were from the days of old: when her people fell into the hand of the adversary, and none did help her, The adversaries saw her, they did mock at her desolations.
  8. Jerusalem has grievously sinned; therefore she is become as an unclean thing; all who honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yes, she sighs, and turns backward.
  9. Her filthiness was in her skirts; she didn't remember her latter end; therefore is she come down wonderfully; she has no comforter: see, Yahweh, my affliction; for the enemy has magnified himself.
  10. The adversary has spread out his hand on all her pleasant things: for she has seen that the nations are entered into her sanctuary, concerning whom you commanded that they should not enter into your assembly.
  11. All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for food to refresh the soul: look, Yahweh, and see; for I am become abject.
  12. Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look, and see if there be any sorrow like my sorrow, which is brought on me, With which Yahweh has afflicted [me] in the day of his fierce anger.
  13. From on high has he sent fire into my bones, and it prevails against them; He has spread a net for my feet, he has turned me back: He has made me desolate and faint all the day.
  14. The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand; They are knit together, they are come up on my neck; he has made my strength to fail: The Lord has delivered me into their hands, against whom I am not able to stand.
  15. The Lord has set at nothing all my mighty men in the midst of me; He has called a solemn assembly against me to crush my young men: The Lord has trodden as in a winepress the virgin daughter of Judah.
  16. For these things I weep; my eye, my eye runs down with water; Because the comforter who should refresh my soul is far from me: My children are desolate, because the enemy has prevailed.
  17. Zion spreads forth her hands; there is none to comfort her; Yahweh has commanded concerning Jacob, that those who are around him should be his adversaries: Jerusalem is among them as an unclean thing.
  18. Yahweh is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: Please hear all you peoples, and see my sorrow: My virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
  19. I called for my lovers, [but] they deceived me: My priests and my elders gave up the spirit in the city, While they sought them food to refresh their souls.
  20. See, Yahweh; for I am in distress; my heart is troubled; My heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: Abroad the sword bereaves, at home there is as death.
  21. They have heard that I sigh; there is none to comfort me; All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it: You will bring the day that you have proclaimed, and they shall be like me.
  22. Let all their wickedness come before you; Do to them, as you have done to me for all my transgressions: For my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.

  1. איכה ישבה בדד העיר רבתי עם היתה כאלמנה רבתי בגוים שרתי במדינות היתה למס׃ ס
  2. בכו תבכה בלילה ודמעתה על לחיה אין־לה מנחם מכל־אהביה כל־רעיה בגדו בה היו לה לאיבים׃ ס
  3. גלתה יהודה מעני ומרב עבדה היא ישבה בגוים לא מצאה מנוח כל־רדפיה השיגוה בין המצרים׃ ס
  4. דרכי ציון אבלות מבלי באי מועד כל־שעריה שוממין כהניה נאנחים בתולתיה נוגות והיא מר־לה׃ ס
  5. היו צריה לראש איביה שלו כי־יהוה הוגה על רב־פשעיה עולליה הלכו שבי לפני־צר׃ ס
  6. ויצא ־ ־ציון כל־הדרה היו שריה כאילים לא־מצאו מרעה וילכו בלא־כח לפני רודף׃ ס
  7. זכרה ירושלם ימי עניה ומרודיה כל מחמדיה אשר היו מימי קדם בנפל עמה ביד־צר ואין עוזר לה ראוה צרים שחקו על משבתה׃ ס
  8. חטא חטאה ירושלם על־כן לנידה היתה כל־מכבדיה הזילוה כי־ראו ערותה גם־היא נאנחה ותשב אחור׃ ס
  9. טמאתה בשוליה לא זכרה אחריתה ותרד פלאים אין מנחם לה ראה יהוה את־עניי כי הגדיל אויב׃ ס
  10. ידו פרש צר על כל־מחמדיה כי־ראתה גוים באו מקדשה אשר צויתה לא־יבאו בקהל לך׃ ס
  11. כל־עמה נאנחים מבקשים לחם נתנו באכל להשיב נפש ראה יהוה והביטה כי הייתי זוללה׃ ס
  12. לוא אליכם כל־עברי דרך הביטו וראו אם־יש מכאוב כמכאבי אשר עולל לי אשר הוגה יהוה ביום חרון אפו׃ ס
  13. ממרום שלח־אש בעצמתי וירדנה פרש רשת לרגלי השיבני אחור נתנני שממה כל־היום דוה׃ ס

  1. πως εκαθισεν μονη η πολις η πεπληθυμμενη λαων εγενηθη ως χηρα πεπληθυμμενη εν εθνεσιν αρχουσα εν χωραις εγενηθη εις
  2. κλαιουσα εκλαυσεν εν νυκτι και τα δακρυα αυτης επι των σιαγονων αυτης και ουχ υπαρχει ο παρακαλων αυτην απο παντων των αγαπωντων αυτην παντες οι φιλουντες αυτην ηθετησαν εν αυτη εγενοντο αυτη εις
  3. μετωκισθη η ιουδαια απο ταπεινωσεως αυτης και απο πληθους δουλειας αυτης εκαθισεν εν εθνεσιν ουχ ευρεν αναπαυσιν παντες οι καταδιωκοντες αυτην κατελαβον αυτην ανα μεσον των
  4. οδοι σιων πενθουσιν παρα το μη ειναι ερχομενους εν εορτη πασαι αι πυλαι αυτης ηφανισμεναι οι ιερεις αυτης αναστεναζουσιν αι παρθενοι αυτης αγομεναι και αυτη πικραινομενη εν
  5. εγενοντο οι θλιβοντες αυτην εις κεφαλην και οι εχθροι αυτης ευθηνουσαν οτι κυριος εταπεινωσεν αυτην επι το πληθος των ασεβειων αυτης τα νηπια αυτης επορευθησαν εν αιχμαλωσια κατα προσωπον
  6. και εξηλθεν εκ θυγατρος σιων πασα η ευπρεπεια αυτης εγενοντο οι αρχοντες αυτης ως κριοι ουχ ευρισκοντες νομην και επορευοντο εν ουκ ισχυι κατα προσωπον
  7. εμνησθη ιερουσαλημ ημερων ταπεινωσεως αυτης και απωσμων αυτης παντα τα επιθυμηματα αυτης οσα ην εξ ημερων αρχαιων εν τω πεσειν τον λαον αυτης εις χειρας θλιβοντος και ουκ ην ο βοηθων αυτη ιδοντες οι εχθροι αυτης εγελασαν επι μετοικεσια
  8. αμαρτιαν ημαρτεν ιερουσαλημ δια τουτο εις σαλον εγενετο παντες οι δοξαζοντες αυτην εταπεινωσαν αυτην ειδον γαρ την ασχημοσυνην αυτης και γε αυτη στεναζουσα και απεστραφη
  9. ακαθαρσια αυτης προς ποδων αυτης ουκ εμνησθη εσχατα αυτης και κατεβιβασεν υπερογκα ουκ εστιν ο παρακαλων αυτην ιδε κυριε την ταπεινωσιν μου οτι εμεγαλυνθη
  10. χειρα αυτου εξεπετασεν θλιβων επι παντα τα επιθυμηματα αυτης ειδεν γαρ εθνη εισελθοντα εις το αγιασμα αυτης α ενετειλω μη εισελθειν αυτα εις εκκλησιαν
  11. πας ο λαος αυτης καταστεναζοντες ζητουντες αρτον εδωκαν τα επιθυμηματα αυτης εν βρωσει του επιστρεψαι ψυχην ιδε κυριε και επιβλεψον οτι εγενηθην
  12. ου προς υμας παντες οι παραπορευομενοι οδον επιστρεψατε και ιδετε ει εστιν αλγος κατα το αλγος μου ο εγενηθη φθεγξαμενος εν εμοι εταπεινωσεν με κυριος εν ημερα οργης θυμου
  13. εξ υψους αυτου απεστειλεν πυρ εν τοις οστεοις μου κατηγαγεν αυτο διεπετασεν δικτυον τοις ποσιν μου απεστρεψεν με εις τα οπισω εδωκεν με ηφανισμενην ολην την ημεραν
  14. εγρηγορηθη επι τα ασεβηματα μου εν χερσιν μου συνεπλακησαν ανεβησαν επι τον τραχηλον μου ησθενησεν η ισχυς μου οτι εδωκεν κυριος εν χερσιν μου οδυνας ου δυνησομαι
  15. εξηρεν παντας τους ισχυρους μου ο κυριος εκ μεσου μου εκαλεσεν επ' εμε καιρον του συντριψαι εκλεκτους μου ληνον επατησεν κυριος παρθενω θυγατρι ιουδα επι τουτοις εγω
  16. ο οφθαλμος μου κατηγαγεν υδωρ οτι εμακρυνθη απ' εμου ο παρακαλων με ο επιστρεφων ψυχην μου εγενοντο οι υιοι μου ηφανισμενοι οτι εκραταιωθη ο
  17. διεπετασεν σιων χειρας αυτης ουκ εστιν ο παρακαλων αυτην ενετειλατο κυριος τω ιακωβ κυκλω αυτου οι θλιβοντες αυτον εγενηθη ιερουσαλημ εις αποκαθημενην ανα μεσον
  18. δικαιος εστιν κυριος οτι το στομα αυτου παρεπικρανα ακουσατε δη παντες οι λαοι και ιδετε το αλγος μου παρθενοι μου και νεανισκοι μου επορευθησαν εν
  19. εκαλεσα τους εραστας μου αυτοι δε παρελογισαντο με οι ιερεις μου και οι πρεσβυτεροι μου εν τη πολει εξελιπον οτι εζητησαν βρωσιν αυτοις ινα επιστρεψωσιν ψυχας αυτων και ουχ
  20. ιδε κυριε οτι θλιβομαι η κοιλια μου εταραχθη και η καρδια μου εστραφη εν εμοι οτι παραπικραινουσα παρεπικρανα εξωθεν ητεκνωσεν με μαχαιρα ωσπερ θανατος εν
  21. ακουσατε δη οτι στεναζω εγω ουκ εστιν ο παρακαλων με παντες οι εχθροι μου ηκουσαν τα κακα μου και εχαρησαν οτι συ εποιησας επηγαγες ημεραν εκαλεσας καιρον και εγενοντο ομοιοι
  22. εισελθοι πασα η κακια αυτων κατα προσωπον σου και επιφυλλισον αυτοις ον τροπον εποιησαν επιφυλλιδα περι παντων των αμαρτηματων μου οτι πολλοι οι στεναγμοι μου και η καρδια μου

  1. PROLOGUS. Et factum est, postquam in captivitatem redactus est Israël, et Jerusalem deserta est, sedit Jeremias propheta flens, et planxit lamentatione hac in Jerusalem : et amaro animo suspirans et ejulans, dixit : ALEPH. Quomodo sedet sola civitas plena populo ! Facta est quasi vidua domina gentium ; princeps provinciarum facta est sub tributo.
  2. BETH. Plorans ploravit in nocte, et lacrimæ ejus in maxillis ejus : non est qui consoletur eam, et omnibus caris ejus ; omnes amici ejus spreverunt eam, et facti sunt ei inimici.
  3. GHIMEL. Migravit Judas propter afflictionem, et multitudinem servitutis ; habitavit inter gentes, nec invenit requiem : omnes persecutores ejus apprehenderunt eam inter angustias.
  4. DALETH. Viæ Sion lugent, eo quod non sint qui veniant ad solemnitatem : omnes portæ ejus destructæ, sacerdotes ejus gementes ; virgines ejus squalidæ, et ipsa oppressa amaritudine.

  6. VAU. Et egressus est a filia Sion omnis decor ejus ; facti sunt principes ejus velut arietes non invenientes pascua, et abierunt absque fortitudine ante faciem subsequentis.
  7. ZAIN. Recordata est Jerusalem dierum afflictionis suæ, et prævaricationis, omnium desiderabilium suorum, quæ habuerat a diebus antiquis, cum caderet populus ejus in manu hostili, et non esset auxiliator : viderunt eam hostes, et deriserunt sabbata ejus.
  8. HETH. Peccatum peccavit Jerusalem, propterea instabilis facta est ; omnes qui glorificabant eam spreverunt illam, quia viderunt ignominiam ejus : ipsa autem gemens conversa est retrorsum.
  9. TETH. Sordes ejus in pedibus ejus, nec recordata est finis sui ; deposita est vehementer, non habens consolatorem. Vide, Domine, afflictionem meam, quoniam erectus est inimicus.
  10. JOD. Manum suam misit hostis ad omnia desiderabilia ejus, quia vidit gentes ingressas sanctuarium suum, de quibus præceperas ne intrarent in ecclesiam tuam.

  13. MEM. De excelso misit ignem in ossibus meis, et erudivit me : expandit rete pedibus meis, convertit me retrorsum ; posuit me desolatam, tota die mœrore confectam.
  14. NUN. Vigilavit jugum iniquitatum mearum ; in manu ejus convolutæ sunt, et impositæ collo meo. Infirmata est virtus mea : dedit me Dominus in manu de qua non potero surgere.
  15. SAMECH. Abstulit omnes magnificos meos Dominus de medio mei ; vocavit adversum me tempus ut contereret electos meos. Torcular calcavit Dominus virgini filiæ Juda.
  16. AIN. Idcirco ego plorans, et oculus meus deducens aquas, quia longe factus est a me consolator, convertens animam meam. Facti sunt filii mei perditi, quoniam invaluit inimicus.
  17. PHE. Expandit Sion manus suas ; non est qui consoletur eam. Mandavit Dominus adversum Jacob in circuitu ejus hostes ejus ; facta est Jerusalem quasi polluta menstruis inter eos.
  18. SADE. Justus est Dominus, quia os ejus ad iracundiam provocavi. Audite, obsecro, universi populi, et videte dolorem meum : virgines meæ et juvenes mei abierunt in captivitatem.
  19. COPH. Vocavi amicos meos, et ipsi deceperunt me ; sacerdotes mei et senes mei in urbe consumpti sunt, quia quæsierunt cibum sibi ut refocillarent animam suam.
  20. RES. Vide, Domine, quoniam tribulor : conturbatus est venter meus, subversum est cor meum in memetipsa, quoniam amaritudine plena sum. Foris interfecit gladius, et domi mors similis est.
  21. SIN. Audierunt quia ingemisco ego, et non est qui consoletur me ; omnes inimici mei audierunt malum meum, lætati sunt quoniam tu fecisti : adduxisti diem consolationis, et fient similes mei.
  22. THAU. Ingrediatur omne malum eorum coram te : et vindemia eos, sicut vindemiasti me propter omnes iniquitates meas : multi enim gemitus mei, et cor meum mœrens.
Lamentations 1 Text (KJV)
  1. How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people how is she become as a widow she that was was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary
  2. She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.
  3. Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.
  4. The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
  5. Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.
  6. And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
  7. Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths.
  8. Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
  9. Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my affliction: for the enemy hath magnified himself.
  10. The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.
  11. All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become vile.
  12. Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
  13. From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day.
  14. The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
  15. The Lord hath trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: the Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.
  16. For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.
  17. Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.
  18. The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
  19. I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls.
  20. Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.
  21. They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.
  22. Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.
