The original meaning and [[etymology]] of the Germanic word ''god'' have been hotly disputed, though most agree to a reconstructed [[Proto-Indo-European]] form ''*ǵhutóm'', which is a passive perfect participle from the root ''*ǵhu-'', which likely meant "[[libation]]", "[[sacrifice]]".
