==Commentary==
The church in Sardis had a name that they were good but Christ judges them otherwiseThe visible churches are mixtures of the saved and false professors. They are mixtures of wheat and tares (Matthew 13:36-43) and of good creatures and bad (Matthew 13:47-48).  The church in Sardis includes those who will overcome and those who will not. Great promises are given to the overcomers: "Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels." (Revelation 3:4-5) In general, the church at Sardis carried a good reputation. In their particular lives, there were many who were defiled. As in: "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity". (Sermon on the Mount: Matthew 7:22-23)
