The Ave Maria developed in the Middle Ages. The first part of the prayer is the salutation of the Archangel Gabriel as reported in the [[Luke 1:28]] - "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is wit thee". The second is from the greeting given to Mary by her cousin Elizabeth in [[Luke 1:42]] - "Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb". The closing petition - "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death." - is from the Roman Catholic [[Council of Trent]].
