"Baptismal regeneration" is the Protestant term for the teaching that forgiveness and salvation is dependent on the physical act of baptism. A number of denominations teach that a person must be baptized to be saved, including the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. This is in contrast to most Protestant churches that teach that baptism is a symbolic event and therefore in itself it holds no saving power.
