History is traditionally divided in the West into the years before and Jesus' birth - AD and BC.
- AD (Anno Domini) - Latin for "In the year of our Lord" - is now sometimes referred to as CE (Common Era)
- BC (Before Christ) is now sometimes referred to as BCE (Before the Common Era)
