- Now David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel.
- He gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.
- The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand.
- David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of Yahweh; six thousand were officers and judges;
- four thousand were doorkeepers; and four thousand praised Yahweh with the instruments which I made, for giving praise."
- David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
- Of the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.
- The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, and Zetham, and Joel, three.
- The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers' [houses] of Ladan.
- The sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.
- Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah didn't have many sons; therefore they became a fathers' house in one reckoning.
- The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.
- The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons, forever, to burn incense before Yahweh, to minister to him, and to bless in his name, forever.
- But as for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.
- The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.
- The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief.
- The sons of Eliezer were: Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.
- The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief.
- The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.
- The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief, and Isshiah the second.
- The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.
- Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters only: and their brothers the sons of Kish took them [to wife].
- The sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.
- These were the sons of Levi after their fathers' houses, even the heads of the fathers' houses of those who were counted individually, in the number of names by their polls, who did the work for the service of the house of Yahweh, from twenty years old and upward.
- For David said, "Yahweh, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people; and he dwells in Jerusalem forever.
- Also the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its vessels for its service."
- For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered, from twenty years old and upward.
- For their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of Yahweh, in the courts, and in the rooms, and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God;
- for the show bread also, and for the fine flour for a meal offering, whether of unleavened wafers, or of that which is baked in the pan, or of that which is soaked, and for all kinds of measure and size;
- and to stand every morning to thank and praise Yahweh, and likewise in the evening;
- and to offer all burnt offerings to Yahweh, on the Sabbaths, on the new moons, and on the set feasts, in number according to the ordinance concerning them, continually before Yahweh;
- and that they should keep the duty of the Tent of Meeting, and the duty of the holy place, and the duty of the sons of Aaron their brothers, for the service of the house of Yahweh.

- ודויד זקן ושבע ימים וימלך את־שלמה בנו על־ישראל׃
- ויאסף את־כל־שרי ישראל והכהנים והלוים׃
- ויספרו הלוים מבן שלשים שנה ומעלה ויהי מספרם לגלגלתם לגברים שלשים ושמונה אלף׃
- מאלה לנצח על־מלאכת בית־יהוה עשרים וארבעה אלף ושטרים ושפטים ששת אלפים׃
- וארבעת אלפים שערים וארבעת אלפים מהללים ליהוה בכלים אשר עשיתי להלל׃
- ויחלקם דויד מחלקות ס לבני לוי לגרשון קהת ומררי׃ ס
- לגרשני לעדן ושמעי׃ ס
- בני לעדן הראש יחיאל וזתם ויואל שלשה׃ ס
- בני שמעי וחזיאל והרן שלשה אלה ראשי האבות ללעדן׃ ס
- ובני שמעי יחת זינא ויעוש ובריעה אלה בני־שמעי ארבעה׃
- ויהי־יחת הראש וזיזה השני ויעוש ובריעה לא־הרבו בנים ויהיו לבית אב לפקדה אחת׃ ס
- בני קהת עמרם יצהר חברון ועזיאל ארבעה׃ ס
- בני עמרם אהרן ומשה ויבדל אהרן להקדישו קדש קדשים הוא־ובניו עד־עולם להקטיר לפני יהוה לשרתו ולברך בשמו עד־עולם׃
- ומשה איש האלהים בניו יקראו על־שבט הלוי׃
- בני משה גרשם ואליעזר׃
- בני גרשום שבואל הראש׃
- ויהיו בני־אליעזר רחביה הראש ולא־היה לאליעזר בנים אחרים ובני רחביה רבו למעלה׃

- כי אמר דויד הניח יהוה אלהי־ישראל לעמו וישכן בירושלם עד־לעולם׃
- וגם ללוים אין־לשאת את־המשכן ואת־כל־כליו לעבדתו׃
- כי בדברי דויד האחרנים המה מספר בני־לוי מבן עשרים שנה ולמעלה׃
- כי מעמדם ליד־בני אהרן לעבדת בית יהוה על־החצרות ועל־הלשכות ועל־טהרת לכל־קדש ומעשה עבדת בית האלהים׃
- וללחם המערכת ולסלת למנחה ולרקיקי המצות ולמחבת ולמרבכת ולכל־משורה ומדה׃
- ולעמד בבקר בבקר להדות ולהלל ליהוה וכן לערב׃
- ולכל העלות עלות ליהוה לשבתות לחדשים ולמעדים במספר כמשפט עליהם תמיד לפני יהוה׃
- ושמרו את־משמרת אהל־מועד ואת משמרת הקדש ומשמרת בני אהרן אחיהם לעבדת בית יהוה׃ ף

- Igitur David senex et plenus dierum, regem constituit Salomonem filium suum super Israël.
- Et congregavit omnes principes Israël, et sacerdotes atque Levitas.
- Numeratique sunt Levitæ a triginta annis, et supra : et inventa sunt triginta octo millia virorum.
- Ex his electi sunt, et distributi in ministerium domus Domini viginti quatuor millia : præpositorum autem et judicum sex millia.
- Porro quatuor millia janitores : et totidem psaltæ canentes Domino in organis, quæ fecerat ad canendum.
- Et distribuit eos David per vices filiorum Levi, Gerson videlicet, et Caath, et Merari.
- Filii Gerson : Leedan, et Semei.

- Levitæ vero ut stent mane ad confitendum, et canendum Domino : similiterque ad vesperam,
- tam in oblatione holocaustorum Domini, quam in sabbatis et calendis et solemnitatibus reliquis juxta numerum, et cæremonias uniuscujusque rei, jugiter coram Domino.

- Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand.
- Of which, twenty and four thousand were to set forward the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges:
- Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith.
- And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
- Of the Gershonites were, Laadan, and Shimei.
- The sons of Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three.
- The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the chief of the fathers of Laadan.
- And the sons of Shimei were, Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.

- Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;
- Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;
- And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even;
- And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD:
- And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.
