- Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh Gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you."
- Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach on all Israel."
- The elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven day, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel; and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you."
- Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
- Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, "What ails the people that they weep?" They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.
- The Spirit of God came mightily on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.
- He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, "Whoever doesn't come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen." The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.
- He numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
- They said to the messengers who came, "Thus you shall tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, 'Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.'" The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
- Therefore the men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you."
- It was so on the next day, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it happened, that those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
- The people said to Samuel, "Who is he who said, 'Shall Saul reign over us?' Bring those men, that we may put them to death!"
- Saul said, "There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today Yahweh has worked deliverance in Israel."
- Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there."
- All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

- ויעל נחש העמוני ויחן על־יבש גלעד ויאמרו כל־אנשי יביש אל־נחש כרת־לנו ברית ונעבדך׃
- ויאמר אליהם נחש העמוני בזאת אכרת לכם בנקור לכם כל־עין ימין ושמתיה חרפה על־כל־ישראל׃
- ויאמרו אליו זקני יביש הרף לנו שבעת ימים ונשלחה מלאכים בכל גבול ישראל ואם־אין מושיע אתנו ויצאנו אליך׃
- ויבאו המלאכים גבעת שאול וידברו הדברים באזני העם וישאו כל־העם את־קולם ויבכו׃
- והנה שאול בא אחרי הבקר מן־השדה ויאמר שאול מה־לעם כי יבכו ויספרו־לו את־דברי אנשי יביש׃
- ותצלח רוח־אלהים על־שאול את־הדברים האלה ויחר אפו מאד׃
- ויקח צמד בקר וינתחהו וישלח בכל־גבול ישראל ביד המלאכים לאמר אשר איננו יצא אחרי שאול ואחר שמואל כה יעשה לבקרו ויפל פחד־יהוה על־העם ויצאו כאיש אחד׃
- ויפקדם בבזק ויהיו בני־ישראל שלש מאות אלף ואיש יהודה שלשים אלף׃
- ויאמרו למלאכים הבאים כה תאמרון לאיש יביש גלעד מחר תהיה־לכם תשועה השמש ויבאו המלאכים ויגידו לאנשי יביש וישמחו׃
- ויאמרו אנשי יביש מחר נצא אליכם ועשיתם לנו ככל־הטוב בעיניכם׃ ס
- ויהי ממחרת וישם שאול את־העם שלשה ראשים ויבאו בתוך־המחנה באשמרת הבקר ויכו את־עמון עד־חם היום ויהי הנשארים ויפצו ולא נשארו־בם שנים יחד׃
- ויאמר העם אל־שמואל מי האמר שאול ימלך עלינו תנו האנשים ונמיתם׃
- ויאמר שאול לא־יומת איש ביום הזה כי היום עשה־יהוה תשועה בישראל׃ ס
- ויאמר שמואל אל־העם לכו ונלכה הגלגל ונחדש שם המלוכה׃

- Et factum est quasi post mensem, ascendit Naas Ammonites, et pugnare cœpit adversum Jabes Galaad. Dixeruntque omnes viri Jabes ad Naas : Habeto nos fœderatos, et serviemus tibi.
- Et respondit ad eos Naas Ammonites : In hoc feriam vobiscum fœdus, ut eruam omnium vestrum oculos dextros, ponamque vos opprobrium in universo Israël.
- Et dixerunt ad eum seniores Jabes : Concede nobis septem dies, ut mittamus nuntios ad universos terminos Israël, et si non fuerit qui defendat nos, egrediemur ad te.
- Venerunt ergo nuntii in Gabaa Saulis : et locuti sunt verba hæc, audiente populo : et levavit omnis populus vocem suam, et flevit.
- Et ecce Saul veniebat, sequens boves de agro, et ait : Quid habet populus quod plorat ? Et narraverunt ei verba virorum Jabes.
- Et insilivit spiritus Domini in Saul, cum audisset verba hæc, et iratus est furor ejus nimis.
- Et assumens utrumque bovem, concidit in frustra, misitque in omnes terminos Israël per manum nuntiorum, dicens : Quicumque non exierit, et secutus fuerit Saul et Samuel, sic fiet bobus ejus. Invasit ergo timor Domini populum, et egressi sunt quasi vir unus.

- And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
- And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
- Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
- And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
