  1. Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
  2. The Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
  3. When they of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh. They took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
  4. When they arose early on the next day morning, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands [lay] cut off on the threshold; only [the stump of] Dagon was left to him.
  5. Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any who come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, to this day.
  6. But the hand of Yahweh was heavy on them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and struck them with tumors, even Ashdod and its borders.
  7. When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, "The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us; for his hand is severe on us, and on Dagon our god."
  8. They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them, and said, "What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?" They answered, "Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried over to Gath." They carried the ark of the God of Israel [there].
  9. It was so, that after they had carried it about, the hand of Yahweh was against the city with a very great confusion: and he struck the men of the city, both small and great; and tumors broke out on them.
  10. So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. It happened, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, "They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people."
  11. They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it not kill us and our people." For there was a deadly confusion throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
  12. The men who didn't die were struck with the tumors; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

  1. ופלשתים לקחו את ארון האלהים ויבאהו מאבן העזר אשדודה׃
  2. ויקחו פלשתים את־ארון האלהים ויביאו אתו בית דגון ויציגו אתו אצל דגון׃
  3. וישכמו אשדודים ממחרת והנה דגון נפל לפניו ארצה לפני ארון יהוה ויקחו את־דגון וישבו אתו למקומו׃
  4. וישכמו בבקר ממחרת והנה דגון נפל לפניו ארצה לפני ארון יהוה וראש דגון ושתי כפות ידיו כרתות אל־המפתן רק דגון נשאר עליו׃
  5. על־כן לא־ידרכו כהני דגון וכל־הבאים בית־דגון על־מפתן דגון באשדוד עד היום הזה׃ ס
  6. ותכבד יד־יהוה אל־האשדודים וישםם ויך אתם את־אשדוד ואת־גבוליה׃
  7. ויראו אנשי־אשדוד כי־כן ואמרו לא־ישב ארון אלהי ישראל עמנו כי־קשתה ידו עלינו ועל דגון אלהינו׃
  8. וישלחו ויאספו את־כל־סרני פלשתים אליהם ויאמרו מה־נעשה לארון אלהי ישראל ויאמרו גת יסב ארון אלהי ישראל ויסבו את־ארון אלהי ישראל׃ ס
  9. ויהי אחרי הסבו אתו ותהי יד־יהוה בעיר מהומה גדולה מאד ויך את־אנשי העיר מקטן ועד־גדול וישתרו להם ׃
  10. וישלחו את־ארון האלהים עקרון ויהי כבוא ארון האלהים עקרון ויזעקו העקרנים לאמר הסבו אלי את־ארון אלהי ישראל להמיתני ואת־עמי׃
  11. וישלחו ויאספו את־כל־סרני פלשתים ויאמרו שלחו את־ארון אלהי ישראל וישב למקמו ולא־ימית אתי ואת־עמי כי־היתה מהומת־מות בכל־העיר כבדה מאד יד האלהים שם׃
  12. והאנשים אשר לא־מתו הכו ותעל שועת העיר השמים׃

  1. και αλλοφυλοι ελαβον την κιβωτον του θεου και εισηνεγκαν αυτην εξ αβεννεζερ εις
  2. και ελαβον αλλοφυλοι την κιβωτον κυριου και εισηνεγκαν αυτην εις οικον δαγων και παρεστησαν αυτην παρα
  3. και εγενετο οτε ωρθρισαν το πρωι και ιδου δαγων πεπτωκως επι προσωπον αυτου ενωπιον κιβωτου διαθηκης κυριου και η κεφαλη δαγων και αμφοτερα τα ιχνη χειρων αυτου αφηρημενα επι τα εμπροσθια αμαφεθ εκαστον και αμφοτεροι οι καρποι των χειρων αυτου πεπτωκοτες επι το προθυρον πλην η ραχις δαγων
  4. και εγενετο οτε ωρθρισαν το πρωι και ιδου δαγων πεπτωκως επι προσωπον αυτου ενωπιον κιβωτου διαθηκης κυριου και η κεφαλη δαγων και αμφοτερα τα ιχνη χειρων αυτου αφηρημενα επι τα εμπροσθια αμαφεθ εκαστον και αμφοτεροι οι καρποι των χειρων αυτου πεπτωκοτες επι το προθυρον πλην η ραχις δαγων
  5. δια τουτο ουκ επιβαινουσιν οι ιερεις δαγων και πας ο εισπορευομενος εις οικον δαγων επι βαθμον οικου δαγων εν αζωτω εως της ημερας ταυτης οτι υπερβαινοντες
  6. και εβαρυνθη χειρ κυριου επι αζωτον και επηγαγεν αυτοις και εξεζεσεν αυτοις εις τας ναυς και μεσον της χωρας αυτης ανεφυησαν μυες και εγενετο συγχυσις θανατου μεγαλη εν τη
  7. και ειδον οι ανδρες αζωτου οτι ουτως και λεγουσιν οτι ου καθησεται κιβωτος του θεου ισραηλ μεθ' ημων οτι σκληρα χειρ αυτου εφ' ημας και επι δαγων θεον
  8. και αποστελλουσιν και συναγουσιν τους σατραπας των αλλοφυλων προς αυτους και λεγουσιν τι ποιησωμεν κιβωτω θεου ισραηλ και λεγουσιν οι γεθθαιοι μετελθετω κιβωτος του θεου προς ημας και μετηλθεν κιβωτος του θεου εις
  9. και εγενηθη μετα το μετελθειν αυτην και γινεται χειρ κυριου εν τη πολει ταραχος μεγας σφοδρα και επαταξεν τους ανδρας της πολεως απο μικρου εως μεγαλου και επαταξεν αυτους εις τας εδρας αυτων και εποιησαν εαυτοις οι γεθθαιοι
  10. και εξαποστελλουσιν την κιβωτον του θεου εις ασκαλωνα και εγενηθη ως εισηλθεν κιβωτος θεου εις ασκαλωνα και εβοησαν οι ασκαλωνιται λεγοντες τι απεστρεψατε προς ημας την κιβωτον του θεου ισραηλ θανατωσαι ημας και τον λαον
  11. και εξαποστελλουσιν και συναγουσιν τους σατραπας των αλλοφυλων και ειπον εξαποστειλατε την κιβωτον του θεου ισραηλ και καθισατω εις τον τοπον αυτης και ου μη θανατωση ημας και τον λαον ημων οτι εγενηθη συγχυσις θανατου εν ολη τη πολει βαρεια σφοδρα ως εισηλθεν κιβωτος θεου ισραηλ
  12. και οι ζωντες και ουκ αποθανοντες επληγησαν εις τας εδρας και ανεβη η κραυγη της πολεως εις τον

  1. Philisthiim autem tulerunt arcam Dei, et asportaverunt eam a lapide Adjutorii in Azotum.
  2. Tuleruntque Philisthiim arcam Dei, et intulerunt eam in templum Dagon, et statuerunt eam juxta Dagon.
  3. Cumque surrexissent diluculo Azotii altera die, ecce Dagon jacebat pronus in terra ante arcam Domini : et tulerunt Dagon, et restituerunt eum in locum suum.
  4. Rursumque mane die altera consurgentes, invenerunt Dagon jacentem super faciem suam in terra coram arca Domini : caput autem Dagon, et duæ palmæ manuum ejus abscissæ erant super limen :
  5. porro Dagon solus truncus remanserat in loco suo. Propter hanc causam non calcant sacerdotes Dagon, et omnes qui ingrediuntur templum ejus, super limen Dagon in Azoto, usque in hodiernum diem.
  6. Aggravata est autem manus Domini super Azotios, et demolitus est eos : et percussit in secretiori parte natium Azotum, et fines ejus. Et ebullierunt villæ et agri in medio regionis illius, et nati sunt mures et facta est confusio mortis magnæ in civitate.
  7. Videntes autem viri Azotii hujuscemodi plagam, dixerunt : Non maneat arca Dei Israël apud nos : quoniam dura est manus ejus super nos, et super Dagon deum nostrum.
  8. Et mittentes congregaverunt omnes satrapas Philisthinorum ad se, et dixerunt : Quid faciemus de arca Dei Israël ? Responderuntque Gethæi : Circumducatur arca Dei Israël. Et circumduxerunt arcam Dei Israël.
  9. Illis autem circumducentibus eam, fiebat manus Domini per singulas civitates interfectionis magnæ nimis : et percutiebat viros uniuscujusque urbis, a parvo usque ad majorem, et computrescebant prominentes extales eorum. Inieruntque Gethæi consilium, et fecerunt sibi sedes pelliceas.
  10. Miserunt ergo arcam Dei in Accaron. Cumque venisset arca Dei in Accaron, exclamaverunt Accaronitæ, dicentes : Adduxerunt ad nos arcam Dei Israël, ut interficiat nos et populum nostrum.
  11. Miserunt itaque et congregaverunt omnes satrapas Philisthinorum : qui dixerunt : Dimittite arcam Dei Israël, et revertatur in locum suum, et non interficiat nos cum populo nostro.
  12. Fiebat enim pavor mortis in singulis urbibus, et gravissima valde manus Dei. Viri quoque, qui mortui non fuerant, percutiebantur in secretiori parte natium : et ascendebat ululatus uniuscujusque civitatis in cælum.

  1. And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod.
  2. When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
  3. And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
  4. And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
  5. Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
  6. But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
  7. And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
  8. They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
  9. And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
  10. Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
  11. So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
  12. And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
