  1. The inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his place; for the band of men who came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.
  2. Forty-two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Athaliah the daughter of Omri.
  3. He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab; for his mother was his counselor to do wickedly.
  4. He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, as did the house of Ahab; for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction.
  5. He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth Gilead: and the Syrians wounded Joram.
  6. He returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which they had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.
  7. Now the destruction of Ahaziah was of God, in that he went to Joram: for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom Yahweh had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.
  8. It happened, when Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, that he found the princes of Judah, and the sons of the brothers of Ahaziah, ministering to Ahaziah, and killed them.
  9. He sought Ahaziah, and they caught him (now he was hiding in Samaria), and they brought him to Jehu, and killed him; and they buried him, for they said, "He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought Yahweh with all his heart." The house of Ahaziah had no power to hold the kingdom.
  10. Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal seed of the house of Judah.
  11. But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king's sons who were slain, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah, so that she didn't kill him.
  12. He was with them hidden in the house of God six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land.

  1. וימליכו יושבי ירושלם את־אחזיהו בנו הקטן תחתיו כי כל־הראשנים הרג הגדוד הבא בערבים למחנה וימלך אחזיהו בן־יהורם מלך יהודה׃ ף
  2. בן־ארבעים ושתים שנה אחזיהו במלכו ושנה אחת מלך בירושלם ושם אמו עתליהו בת־עמרי׃
  3. גם־הוא הלך בדרכי בית אחאב כי אמו היתה יועצתו להרשיע׃
  4. ויעש הרע בעיני יהוה כבית אחאב כי־המה היו־לו יועצים אחרי מות אביו למשחית לו׃
  5. גם בעצתם הלך וילך את־יהורם בן־אחאב מלך ישראל למלחמה על־חזאל מלך־ארם ברמות גלעד ויכו הרמים את־יורם׃
  6. וישב להתרפא ביזרעאל כי המכים אשר הכהו ברמה בהלחמו את־חזהאל מלך ארם ועזריהו בן־יהורם מלך יהודה ירד לראות את־יהורם בן־אחאב ביזרעאל כי־חלה הוא׃
  7. ומאלהים היתה תבוסת אחזיהו לבוא אל־יורם ובבאו יצא עם־יהורם אל־יהוא בן־נמשי אשר משחו יהוה להכרית את־בית אחאב׃
  8. ויהי כהשפט יהוא עם־בית אחאב וימצא את־שרי יהודה ובני אחי אחזיהו משרתים לאחזיהו ויהרגם׃
  9. ויבקש את־אחזיהו וילכדהו והוא מתחבא בשמרון ויבאהו אל־יהוא וימתהו ויקברהו כי אמרו בן־יהושפט הוא אשר־דרש את־יהוה בכל־לבבו ואין לבית אחזיהו לעצר כח לממלכה׃
  10. ועתליהו אם אחזיהו ראתה כי מת בנה ותקם ותדבר את־כל־זרע הממלכה לבית יהודה׃
  11. ותקח יהושבעת בת־המלך את־יואש בן־אחזיהו ותגנב אתו מתוך בני־המלך המומתים ותתן אתו ואת־מינקתו בחדר המטות ותסתירהו יהושבעת בת־המלך יהורם אשת יהוידע הכהן כי היא היתה אחות אחזיהו מפני עתליהו ולא המיתתהו׃
  12. ויהי אתם בבית האלהים מתחבא שש שנים ועתליה מלכת על־הארץ׃ ף

  1. και εβασιλευσαν οι κατοικουντες εν ιερουσαλημ τον οχοζιαν υιον αυτου τον μικρον αντ' αυτου οτι παντας τους πρεσβυτερους απεκτεινεν το ληστηριον το επελθον επ' αυτους οι αραβες και οι αλιμαζονεις και εβασιλευσεν οχοζιας υιος ιωραμ βασιλεως
  2. ων εικοσι ετων οχοζιας εβασιλευσεν και ενιαυτον ενα εβασιλευσεν εν ιερουσαλημ και ονομα τη μητρι αυτου γοθολια θυγατηρ
  3. και ουτος επορευθη εν οδω οικου αχααβ οτι μητηρ αυτου ην συμβουλος του
  4. και εποιησεν το πονηρον εναντιον κυριου ως οικος αχααβ οτι αυτοι ησαν αυτω μετα το αποθανειν τον πατερα αυτου συμβουλοι του εξολεθρευσαι
  5. και εν ταις βουλαις αυτων επορευθη και επορευθη μετα ιωραμ υιου αχααβ εις πολεμον επι αζαηλ βασιλεα συριας εις ραμα γαλααδ και επαταξαν οι τοξοται τον
  6. και επεστρεψεν ιωραμ του ιατρευθηναι εις ιεζραελ απο των πληγων ων επαταξαν αυτον οι συροι εν ραμα εν τω πολεμειν αυτον προς αζαηλ βασιλεα συριας και οχοζιας υιος ιωραμ βασιλευς ιουδα κατεβη θεασασθαι τον ιωραμ υιον αχααβ εις ιεζραελ οτι
  7. και παρα του θεου εγενετο καταστροφη οχοζια ελθειν προς ιωραμ και εν τω ελθειν αυτον εξηλθεν μετ' αυτου ιωραμ προς ιου υιον ναμεσσι χριστον κυριου τον οικον
  8. και εγενετο ως εξεδικησεν ιου τον οικον αχααβ και ευρεν τους αρχοντας ιουδα και τους αδελφους οχοζια λειτουργουντας τω οχοζια και απεκτεινεν
  9. και ειπεν του ζητησαι τον οχοζιαν και κατελαβον αυτον ιατρευομενον εν σαμαρεια και ηγαγον αυτον προς ιου και απεκτεινεν αυτον και εθαψαν αυτον οτι ειπαν υιος ιωσαφατ εστιν ος εζητησεν τον κυριον εν ολη καρδια αυτου και ουκ ην εν οικω οχοζια κατισχυσαι δυναμιν περι της
  10. και γοθολια η μητηρ οχοζια ειδεν οτι τεθνηκεν αυτης ο υιος και ηγερθη και απωλεσεν παν το σπερμα της βασιλειας εν οικω
  11. και ελαβεν ιωσαβεθ η θυγατηρ του βασιλεως τον ιωας υιον οχοζια και εκλεψεν αυτον εκ μεσου υιων του βασιλεως των θανατουμενων και εδωκεν αυτον και την τροφον αυτου εις ταμιειον των κλινων και εκρυψεν αυτον ιωσαβεθ θυγατηρ του βασιλεως ιωραμ αδελφη οχοζιου γυνη ιωδαε του ιερεως και εκρυψεν αυτον απο προσωπου γοθολιας και ουκ απεκτεινεν
  12. και ην μετ' αυτης εν οικω του θεου κατακεκρυμμενος εξ ετη και γοθολια εβασιλευσεν επι της

  1. Constituerunt autem habitatores Jerusalem Ochoziam filium ejus minimum regem pro eo : omnes enim majores natu, qui ante eum fuerant, interfecerant latrones Arabum, qui irruerant in castra : regnavitque Ochozias filius Joram regis Juda.
  2. Quadraginta duorum annorum erat Ochozias cum regnare cœpisset, et uno anno regnavit in Jerusalem, et nomen matris ejus Athalia filia Amri.
  3. Sed et ipse ingressus est per vias domus Achab : mater enim ejus impulit eum ut impie ageret.
  4. Fecit igitur malum in conspectu Domini, sicut domus Achab : ipsi enim fuerunt ei consiliarii post mortem patris sui, in interitum ejus.
  5. Ambulavitque in consiliis eorum. Et perrexit cum Joram filio Achab rege Israël in bellum contra Hazaël regem Syriæ in Ramoth Galaad : vulneraveruntque Syri Joram.
  6. Qui reversus est ut curaretur in Jezrahel : multas enim plagas acceperat in supradicto certamine. Igitur Ochozias filius Joram rex Juda descendit ut inviseret Joram filium Achab in Jezrahel ægrotantem.
  7. Voluntatis quippe fuit Dei adversus Ochoziam, ut veniret ad Joram : et cum venisset, et egrederetur cum eo adversum Jehu filium Namsi, quem unxit Dominus ut deleret domum Achab.
  8. Cum ergo everteret Jehu domum Achab, invenit principes Juda, et filios fratrum Ochoziæ, qui ministrabant ei, et interfecit illos.
  9. Ipsum quoque perquirens Ochoziam, comprehendit latitantem in Samaria : adductumque ad se, occidit, et sepelierunt eum, eo quod esset filius Josaphat, qui quæsierat Dominum in toto corde suo. Nec erat ultra spes aliqua ut de stirpe quis regnaret Ochoziæ :
  10. siquidem Athalia mater ejus videns quod mortuus esset filius suus, surrexit, et interfecit omnem stirpem regiam domus Joram.
  11. Porro Josabeth filia regis tulit Joas filium Ochoziæ, et furata est eum de medio filiorum regis, cum interficerentur : absconditque eum cum nutrice sua in cubiculo lectulorum : Josabeth autem, quæ absconderat eum, erat filia regis Joram, uxor Jojadæ pontificis, soror Ochoziæ, et idcirco Athalia non interfecit eum.
  12. Fuit ergo cum eis in domo Dei absconditus sex annis, quibus regnavit Athalia super terram.

So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of Ahaziah,) hid him from Athaliah, so that she slew him not.
  12. And he was with them hid in the house of God six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land.
