Amazing Grace - Truly Beautiful Version |
---|
Amazing Grace is probably one of the best known hymns in the world today. It is especially popular in the United States. The words tell of the grace of God - the gift of forgiveness and life that he gives to us freely.
The hymn was written by John Newton, an English man who was born in 1725. As a young man he was captain of a ship that was used for slave-trading. During one voyage he cried out to God for mercy as the ship was tossed about in a storm. His ship was spared and John Newton began his walk towards Christ. He continued to be a slave trader for some years but there was a slow transformation and within the next 20 years Newton had given up this life and had become the parish priest of Olney, a village near London. Whilst here he wrote the the words to the famous hymn, Amazing Grace.
Words
Amazing grace (how sweet the sound) That saved a wretch like me I once was lost, but now am found Was blind but now I see It was grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already overcome It was grace that led me safe thus far And grace will bring me home When we've been there a thousand years Bright shining as the sun We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we first begun
