The word Apostle is from the [[Greek]] "απόστολος" ([[apostolos]]) which means "a messenger". The twelve apostles were [[Jesus]] disciples who were sent forth by Jesus to preach the [[Gospel]] to both Jews and Gentiles across the world.

The subject of what an apostle is and what qualifications are required is debated today. In one sense, all Christians are messengers or apostles of the gospel. However, the term apostle is generally viewed as a special title reserved for the 12 disciples of Jesus and Matthias (who replaced Judas) and Paul. There are a number of churches that use the term apostle for contemporary leaders.
