Baal was a god (or referred to any of the local spirit-gods) of the Phoenecians. Baal was worshipped by the Israelites in the time of [[Ahab]], as god of the rain and lightening. The prophet [[Elijah]] was called by [[God]] to turn the people's hearts back to God, away from Baal.
