Commentary

Verse 9 sets the scene for the martyrdom of Stephen.

Although there was only one Temple, there would have been many synagogues in Jerusalem. In this synagogue of freedmen (or libertines), it is likely that many of its members were ex-slaves. In addition they were Diaspora Jews.

Hebrew ויקומו אנשים מבית הכנסת הנקרא על שם הליברטינים ושל קורינים ואלכסנדריים ומן בני קיליקיא ואסיא ויתוכחו עם אסטפנוס׃
Greek ανεστησαν δε τινες των εκ της συναγωγης της λεγομενης λιβερτινων και κυρηναιων και αλεξανδρεων και των απο κιλικιας και ασιας συζητουντες τω στεφανω
Latin Surrexerunt autem quidam de synagoga, quæ appellatur Libertinorum, et Cyrenensium, et Alexandrinorum, et eorum qui erant a Cilicia, et Asia, disputantes cum Stephano :
