Commentary
Genesis 1:1 is the first verse of the Bible. It tells us that God created everything. It tells us that God is outside the universe and was before it. It reminds us that we are created. And it sets the scene for the rest of the Bible.
The first word in the original Hebrew is בְּרֵאשִׁית (Bereishit), which means "beginning". The word "Genesis" in English is from the Greek word Γένεσις which means birth or origin.
