Wikipedia with hundreds-of-thousands of articles is the most well-known wiki website and is a testimony to the effectiveness of wikis in allowing exhange of information through collaborative effort. It contains thousands of articles related to religion. One of the criticisms that adherents to various religious groups have however is that in attempting to maintain a neutral point of view, some of the teachings of their religion can be "watered-down" or altered. These critics also state that the neutral point of view is in the eye of the beholder. In response to some of these criticism, explicitly Christian wiki websites have been set up. The majority of them adhere to a specific Christian denomination or tradition, including most that claim to be non-specifically "Christian" in nature. They tend to fall into three categories, Online Bible encyclopedias (of varying completeness and denominational emphases), general Christianity wikis without a specific denominational slant, and wikis devoted to a specific Christian denomination or tradition.

BibleWiki is a "project to build a wiki of information around the Bible". It contents include the text of the King James Version, Easton's Bible Dictionary of 1897, the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1907, the Jewish Encyclopedia of 1906. It is now starting to add commentary texts as well. It aims towards the scholarly approach, rather than denominational doctrines. BibleWiki is produced under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.

"The Bible Wiki is a so-called wiki with a lot of information about the Bible. Or in traditional terms, it's a Bible encyclopedia. Throughout all articles in this wiki, it is assumed that the Bible is true. Or, as you might rephrase it, it assumes the point of view from the Bible. This is a sharp contrast to projects like Wikipedia which assumes a neutral point of view (NPOV)." It appears to presume Protestant canon.

It has no index and the table of contents has a single entry.

The first Christian wiki was Clublet, begun by Richard Drake in 2000.
"Wikible is a Christian community focused on centralizing all data available relating to the Bible." Its contents are apparently determined from a Protestant standpoint, given that it explicitly rejects any authority for the Apocrypha. Some of its contents include Easton's Bible Dictionary, the Jewish Encyclopedia, text of the King James Version, the text of the New American Standard Bible, and more. Wikible is produced under the GFDL, except for copyrighted works such as the NASB and other copyrighted Bible translations.

WikiChristian claims to be the largest wiki specifically related to Christianity on the internet. It was set-up in late 2004 by an American called Prab R Tumpati and by Graham Grove in Australia. It aims to be a useful reference on all topics related to Christianity. Articles need not be neutral in viewpoint as long as the article is clearly marked as an opinion. WikiChristian uses the GFDL.

In 2006 and 2007 there was a brief explosion of Christian wikis, particularly "Bible" wikis dedicated to Biblical Christianity, such as Wikible. Most of these wikis have since disappeared because of lack of interest by web-users.

A wiki website is a site that allows users to add content, as on an internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content. There are a number of wiki websites related to Christianity.

Reasons Underlying the Development of Christian Wikis

The first wiki was set up by Ward Cunningham in 1995. Wikipedia, the most well known wiki website, was started in 2001, and currently contains millions of articles. Some of these Christian wikis, like OrthodoxWiki and Theopedia, are devoted to a particular Christian denomination or theological slant whereas others, like WikiChristian, are open to a wider diversity of views.

History of Christian Wikis

The first Christian wiki was Clublet, begun by Richard Drake in 2000.

Another early Christian wiki was Compass, which was set up by Richard Hall in early 2001. This is no longer online.

In late 2004 WikiChristian was set up as a non-denominational wiki for Christianity.

Other wikis developed in early 2005 including Orthodox Wiki (for Eastern Orthodoxy) and Theopedia (for Reformed Protestantism).

In 2006 and 2007 there was a brief explosion of Christian wikis, particularly "Bible" wikis dedicated to Biblical Christianity, such as Wikible. Most of these wikis have since disappeared because of lack of interest by web-users.

On August 23, 2009, Robert Pierce (Master Frederique) founded LifeMusic Wiki, a database on Christian music. It is now the largest Christian music wiki and the second largest Christian wiki.

No Christian wikis have achieved anything like the numerical success of editors that wikipedia has. Currently there are only four English-language Christian wikis that have regular daily users. These are Theopedia, OrthodoxWiki, LifeMusic Wiki, and WikiChristian, WikiChristian being the largest.
