Ecclesiastes 12 Text (WEB) Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw near, when you will say, "I have no pleasure in them;" Before the sun, the light, the moon, and the stars are darkened, and the clouds return after the rain; in the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those who look out of the windows are darkened, and the doors shall be shut in the street; when the sound of the grinding is low, and one shall rise up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low; yes, they shall be afraid of heights, and terrors will be in the way; and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail; because man goes to his everlasting home, and the mourners go about the streets: before the silver cord is severed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the spring, or the wheel broken at the cistern, and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher. "All is vanity!" Further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yes, he pondered, sought out, and set in order many proverbs. The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words, and that which was written blamelessly, words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads; and like nails well fastened are words from the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. Furthermore, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. This is the end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it is good, or whether it is evil.
Ecclesiastes 12 Text (Hebrew) וזכר את־בוראיך בימי בחורתיך עד אשר לא־יבאו ימי הרעה והגיעו שנים אשר תאמר אין־לי בהם חפץ׃ עד אשר לא־תחשך השמש והאור והירח והכוכבים ושבו העבים אחר הגשם׃ ביום שיזעו שמרי הבית והתעותו אנשי החיל ובטלו הטחנות כי מעטו וחשכו הראות בארבות׃ וסגרו דלתים בשוק בשפל קול הטחנה ויקום לקול הצפור וישחו כל־בנות השיר׃ גם מגבה יראו וחתחתים בדרך וינאץ השקד ויסתבל החגב ותפר האביונה כי־הלך האדם אל־בית עולמו וסבבו בשוק הספדים׃ עד אשר לא־ חבל הכסף ותרץ גלת הזהב ותשבר כד על־המבוע ונרץ הגלגל אל־הבור׃ וישב העפר על־הארץ כשהיה והרוח תשוב אל־האלהים אשר נתנה׃ הבל הבלים אמר הקוהלת הכל הבל׃ ויתר שהיה קהלת חכם עוד למד־דעת את־העם ואזן וחקר תקן משלים הרבה׃ בקש קהלת למצא דברי־חפץ וכתוב ישר דברי אמת׃ דברי חכמים כדרבנות וכמשמרות נטועים בעלי אספות נתנו מרעה אחד׃ ויתר מהמה בני הזהר עשות ספרים הרבה אין קץ ולהג הרבה יגעת בשר׃ סוף דבר הכל נשמע את־האלהים ירא ואת־מצותיו שמור כי־זה כל־האדם׃ כי את־כל־מעשה האלהים יבא במשפט על כל־נעלם אם־טוב ואם־רע׃
Ecclesiastes 12 Text (Greek) και μνησθητι του κτισαντος σε εν ημεραις νεοτητος σου εως οτου μη ελθωσιν ημεραι της κακιας και φθασωσιν ετη εν οις ερεις ουκ εστιν μοι εν αυτοις εως ου μη σκοτισθη ο ηλιος και το φως και η σεληνη και οι αστερες και επιστρεψωσιν τα νεφη οπισω του εν ημερα η εαν σαλευθωσιν φυλακες της οικιας και διαστραφωσιν ανδρες της δυναμεως και ηργησαν αι αληθουσαι οτι ωλιγωθησαν και σκοτασουσιν αι βλεπουσαι εν ταις και κλεισουσιν θυρας εν αγορα εν ασθενεια φωνης της αληθουσης και αναστησεται εις φωνην του στρουθιου και ταπεινωθησονται πασαι αι θυγατερες του και γε απο υψους οψονται και θαμβοι εν τη οδω και ανθηση το αμυγδαλον και παχυνθη η ακρις και διασκεδασθη η καππαρις οτι επορευθη ο ανθρωπος εις οικον αιωνος αυτου και εκυκλωσαν εν αγορα οι εως οτου μη ανατραπη σχοινιον του αργυριου και συνθλιβη ανθεμιον του χρυσιου και συντριβη υδρια επι την πηγην και συντροχαση ο τροχος επι τον και επιστρεψη ο χους επι την γην ως ην και το πνευμα επιστρεψη προς τον θεον ος εδωκεν ματαιοτης ματαιοτητων ειπεν ο εκκλησιαστης τα παντα πολλα εζητησεν εκκλησιαστης του ευρειν λογους θεληματος και γεγραμμενον ευθυτητος λογους πολλα εζητησεν εκκλησιαστης του ευρειν λογους θεληματος και γεγραμμενον ευθυτητος λογους λογοι σοφων ως τα βουκεντρα και ως ηλοι πεφυτευμενοι οι παρα των συναγματων εδοθησαν εκ ποιμενος ενος και περισσον εξ υιε μου φυλαξαι ποιησαι βιβλια πολλα ουκ εστιν περασμος και μελετη πολλη κοπωσις τελος λογου το παν ακουεται τον θεον φοβου και τας εντολας αυτου φυλασσε οτι τουτο πας ο οτι συν παν το ποιημα ο θεος αξει εν κρισει εν παντι παρεωραμενω εαν αγαθον και εαν

Florebit amygdalus, impinguabitur locusta, et dissipabitur capparis, quoniam ibit homo in domum æternitatis suæ, et circuibunt in platea plangentes. His amplius, fili mi, ne requiras. Faciendi plures libros nullus est finis ; frequensque meditatio, carnis afflictio est. Finem loquendi pariter omnes audiamus. Deum time, et mandata ejus observa : hoc est enim omnis homo, et cuncta quæ fiunt adducet Deus in judicium pro omni errato, sive bonum, sive malum illud sit.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Commentary

Ecclesiastes 12 is the final chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament. After the book has looked at life from many different angles and noted the meaninglessness of toiling for wealth or fame or living for pleasure, it concludes with the famous ending that the whole duty of a person is to "fear and God and keep his commandments".
