Texts

"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below." (Exodus 20.4)

Leviticus 26:1, Deuteronomy 5:8, and Deuteronomy 27.15 agree with Exodus 20:4 above.

"You shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat." (Exodus 25:18)

Exodus 37:7-8 agrees with Exodus 25:18 above.

The Problem

Some passages in the Torah tell the Hebrews not to make graven images of creatures in heaven, but other passages record God telling the Hebrews to make sculptures of cherubim, a kind of angel.
