Commentary
The story of Abraham is introduced in Genesis 12. God calls Abraham to leave his family and his home, and with a step of faith, to follow Him. He travels to Canaan, but needs to leave, and lives for a time in Egypt because of famine. Whilst in Egypt, because of fear, he allows his wife, Sarah, to be taken into the house of Pharoah.

The promises of God
Genesis 12 begins with God making a promise to Abraham, that he would be blessed, become known as great, and have many descendents that become a great nation. The final part of the God's promise is that all people on earth will be blessed through Abraham. This promise is one of the central sentences in the Bible. The rest of the Old Testament shows how God brings about this promise, culminating in the New Testament with the coming of Jesus, a descendent of Abraham, who brings God's love and blessing to the whole world.
