Genesis 41 Text (WEB) It happened at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and behold, he stood by the river. Behold, there came up out of the river seven cattle, sleek and fat, and they fed in the marsh grass. Behold, seven other cattle came up after them out of the river, ugly and thin, and stood by the other cattle on the brink of the river. The ugly and thin cattle ate up the seven sleek and fat cattle. So Pharaoh awoke. He slept and dreamed a second time: and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, healthy and good. Behold, seven heads of grain, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy and full ears. Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream. It happened in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all of Egypt's magicians and wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh. Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, "I remember my faults today. Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, me and the chief baker. We dreamed a dream in one night, I and he. We dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. There was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard, and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams. To each man according to his dream he interpreted. It happened, as he interpreted to us, so it was: he restored me to my office, and he hanged him." Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothing, and came in to Pharaoh. Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it." Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "It isn't in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace." Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, "In my dream, behold, I stood on the brink of the river: and behold, there came up out of the river seven cattle, fat and sleek. They fed in the marsh grass, and behold, seven other cattle came up after them, poor and very ugly and thin, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for ugliness. The thin and ugly cattle ate up the first seven fat cattle, and when they had eaten them up, it couldn't be known that they had eaten them, but they were still ugly, as at the beginning. So I awoke. I saw in my dream, and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, full and good: and behold, seven heads of grain, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads of grain. I told it to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me." Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dream of Pharaoh is one. What God is about to do he has declared to Pharaoh. The seven good cattle are seven years; and the seven good heads of grain are seven years. The dream is one. The seven thin and ugly cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty heads of grain blasted with the east wind; they will be seven years of famine. That is the thing which I spoke to Pharaoh. What God is about to do he has shown to Pharaoh. Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt. There will arise after them seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land, and the plenty will not be known in the land by reason of that famine which follows; for it will be very grievous. The dream was doubled to Pharaoh, because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. "Now therefore let Pharaoh look for a discreet and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt's produce in the seven plenteous years. Let them gather all the food of these good years that come, and lay up grain under the hand of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. The food will be for a store to the land against the seven years of famine, which will be in the land of Egypt; that the land not perish through the famine." The thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants. Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?" Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Because God has shown you all of this, there is none so discreet and wise as you. You shall be over my house, and according to your word will all my people be ruled. Only in the throne I will be greater than you." Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Behold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt." Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck, and he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had. They cried before him, "Bow the knee!" He set him over all the land of Egypt. Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, and without you shall no man lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt." Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphenath-Paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On as a wife. Joseph went out over the land of Egypt. Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. In the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth abundantly. He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was around every city, he laid up in the same. Joseph laid up grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped counting, for it was without number. To Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him. Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, "For," he said, "God has made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house." The name of the second, he called Ephraim: "For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction." The seven years of plenty, that were in the land of Egypt, came to an end. The seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do." The famine was over all the surface of the earth. Joseph opened all the store houses, and sold to the Egyptians. The famine was severe in the land of Egypt. All countries came into Egypt, to Joseph, to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the earth.
Genesis 41 Text (Hebrew) ויהי מקץ שנתים ימים ופרעה חלם והנה עמד על־היאר׃ והנה מן־היאר עלת שבע פרות יפות מראה ובריאת בשר ותרעינה באחו׃ והנה שבע פרות אחרות עלות אחריהן מן־היאר רעות מראה ודקות בשר ותעמדנה אצל הפרות על־שפת היאר׃ ותאכלנה הפרות רעות המראה ודקת הבשר את שבע הפרות יפת המראה והבריאת וייקץ פרעה׃ ויישן ויחלם שנית והנה שבע שבלים עלות בקנה אחד בריאות וטבות׃ והנה שבע שבלים דקות ושדופת קדים צמחות אחריהן׃ ותבלענה השבלים הדקות את שבע השבלים הבריאות והמלאות וייקץ פרעה והנה חלום׃ ויהי בבקר ותפעם רוחו וישלח ויקרא את־כל־חרטמי מצרים ואת־כל־חכמיה ויספר פרעה להם את־חלמו ואין־פותר אותם לפרעה׃ וידבר שר המשקים את־פרעה לאמר את־חטאי אני מזכיר היום׃ פרעה קצף על־עבדיו ויתן אתי במשמר בית שר הטבחים אתי ואת שר האפים׃ ונחלמה חלום בלילה אחד אני והוא איש כפתרון חלמו חלמנו׃ ושם אתנו נער עברי עבד לשר הטבחים ונספר־לו ויפתר־לנו את־חלמתינו איש כחלמו פתר׃ ויהי כאשר פתר־לנו כן היה אתי השיב על־כני ואתו תלה׃ וישלח פרעה ויקרא את־יוסף ויריצהו מן־הבור ויגלח ויחלף שמלתיו ויבא אל־פרעה׃ ויאמר פרעה אל־יוסף חלום חלמתי ופתר אין אתו ואני שמעתי עליך לאמר תשמע חלום לפתר אתו׃ ויען יוסף את־פרעה לאמר בלעדי אלהים יענה את־שלום פרעה׃ וידבר פרעה אל־יוסף בחלמי הנני עמד על־שפת היאר׃ והנה מן־היאר עלת שבע פרות בריאות בשר ויפת תאר ותרעינה באחו׃ והנה שבע־פרות אחרות עלות אחריהן דלות ורעות תאר מאד ורקות בשר לא־ראיתי כהנה בכל־ארץ מצרים לרע׃ ותאכלנה הפרות הרקות והרעות את שבע הפרות הראשנות הבריאת׃ ותבאנה אל־קרבנה ולא נודע כי־באו אל־קרבנה ומראיהן רע כאשר בתחלה ואיקץ׃ וארא בחלמי והנה שבע שבלים עלת בקנה אחד מלאת וטבות׃ והנה שבע שבלים צנמות דקות שדפות קדים צמחות אחריהם׃ ותבלען השבלים הדקת את שבע השבלים הטבות ואמר אל־החרטמים ואין מגיד לי׃ ויאמר יוסף אל־פרעה חלום פרעה אחד הוא את אשר האלהים עשה הגיד לפרעה׃ שבע פרת הטבת שבע שנים הנה ושבע השבלימ הטבת שבע שנים הנה חלום אחד הוא׃ ושבע הפרות הרקות והרעת העלת אחריהן שבע שנים הנה ושבע השבלים הרקות שדפות הקדים יהיו שבע שני רעב׃ הוא הדבר אשר דברתי אל־פרעה אשר האלהים עשה הראה את־פרעה׃ הנה שבע שנים באות שבע גדול בכל־ארץ מצרים׃ וקמו שבע שני רעב אחריהן ונשכח כל־השבע בארץ מצרים וכלה הרעב את־הארץ׃ ולא־יודע השבע בארץ מפני הרעב ההוא אחרי־כן כי־כבד הוא מאד׃ ועל השנות החלום אל־פרעה פעמים כי־נכון הדבר מעם האלהים וממהר האלהים לעשתו׃ ועתה ירא פרעה איש נבון וחכם וישיתהו על־ארץ מצרים׃ יעשה פרעה ויפקד פקדים על־הארץ וחמש את־ארץ מצרים בשבע שני השבע׃ ויקבצו את־כל־אכל השנים הטבת הבאת האלה ויצברו־בר תחת יד־פרעה אכל בערים ושמרו׃ והיה האכל לפקדון לארץ לשבע שני הרעב אשר תהיין בארץ מצרים ולא־תכרת הארץ ברעב׃ וייטב הדבר בעיני פרעה ובעיני כל־עבדיו׃ ויאמר פרעה אל־עבדיו הנמצא כזה איש אשר רוח אלהים בו׃ ויאמר פרעה אל־יוסף אחרי הודיע אלהים אותך את־כל־זאת אין־נבון וחכם כמוך׃ אתה תהיה על־ביתי ועל־פיך ישק כל־עמי רק הכסא אגדל ממך׃ ויאמר פרעה אל־יוסף ראה נתתי אתך על כל־ארץ מצרים׃ ויסר פרעה את־טבעתו מעל ידו ויתן אתה על־יד יוסף וילבש אתו בגדי־שש וישם רבד הזהב על־צוארו׃ וירכב אתו במרכבת המשנה אשר־לו ויקראו לפניו אברך ונתון אתו על כל־ארץ מצרים׃ ויאמר פרעה אל־יוסף אני פרעה ובלעדיך לא־ירים איש את־ידו ואת־רגלו בכל־ארץ מצרים׃ ויקרא פרעה שם־יוסף צפנת פענח ויתן־לו את־אסנת בת־פוטי פרע כהן אן לאשה ויצא יוסף על־ארץ מצרים׃ ויוסף בן־שלשים שנה בעמדו לפני פרעה מלך־מצרים ויצא יוסף מלפני פרעה ויעבר בכל־ארץ מצרים׃ ותעש הארץ בשבע שני השבע לקמצים׃ ויקבץ את־כל־אכל שבע שנים אשר היו בארץ מצרים ויתן־אכל בערים אכל שדה־העיר אשר סביבתיה נתן בתוכה׃ ויצבר יוסף בר כחול הים הרבה מאד עד כי־חדל לספר כי־אין מספר׃ וליוסף ילד שני בנים בטרם תבוא שנת הרעב אשר ילדה־לו אסנת בת־פוטי פרע כהן און׃ ויקרא יוסף את־שם הבכור מנשה כי־נשני אלהים את־כל־עמלי ואת כל־בית אבי׃ ואת שם השני קרא אפרים כי־הפרני אלהים בארץ עניי׃ ותכלינה שבע שני השבע אשר היה בארץ מצרים׃ ותחלינה שבע שני הרעב לבוא כאשר אמר יוסף ויהי רעב בכל־הארצות ובכל־ארץ מצרים היה לחם׃ ותרעב כל־ארץ מצרים ויצעק העם אל־פרעה ללחם ויאמר פרעה לכל־מצרים לכו אל־יוסף אשר־יאמר לכם תעשו׃ והרעב היה על כל־פני הארץ ויפתח יוסף את־כל־אשר בהם וישבר למצרים ויחזק הרעב בארץ מצרים׃ וכל־הארץ באו מצרימה לשבר אל־יוסף כי־חזק הרעב בכל־הארץ׃
Genesis 41 Text (Greek) εγενετο δε μετα δυο ετη ημερων φαραω ειδεν ενυπνιον ωετο εσταναι επι του και ιδου ωσπερ εκ του ποταμου ανεβαινον επτα βοες καλαι τω ειδει και εκλεκται ταις σαρξιν και εβοσκοντο εν τω αλλαι δε επτα βοες ανεβαινον μετα ταυτας εκ του ποταμου αισχραι τω ειδει και λεπται ταις σαρξιν και ενεμοντο παρα τας βοας παρα το χειλος του και κατεφαγον αι επτα βοες αι αισχραι και λεπται ταις σαρξιν τας επτα βοας τας καλας τω ειδει και τας εκλεκτας ηγερθη δε και ενυπνιασθη το δευτερον και ιδου επτα σταχυες ανεβαινον εν πυθμενι ενι εκλεκτοι και αλλοι δε επτα σταχυες λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι ανεφυοντο μετ' και κατεπιον οι επτα σταχυες οι λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι τους επτα σταχυας τους εκλεκτους και τους πληρεις ηγερθη δε φαραω και ην εγενετο δε πρωι και εταραχθη η ψυχη αυτου και αποστειλας εκαλεσεν παντας τους εξηγητας αιγυπτου και παντας τους σοφους αυτης και διηγησατο αυτοις φαραω το ενυπνιον και ουκ ην ο απαγγελλων αυτο τω και ελαλησεν ο αρχιοινοχοος προς φαραω λεγων την αμαρτιαν μου αναμιμνησκω φαραω ωργισθη τοις παισιν αυτου και εθετο ημας εν φυλακη εν τω οικω του αρχιμαγειρου εμε τε και τον και ειδομεν ενυπνιον εν νυκτι μια εγω τε και αυτος εκαστος κατα το αυτου ενυπνιον ην δε εκει μεθ' ημων νεανισκος παις εβραιος του αρχιμαγειρου και διηγησαμεθα αυτω και συνεκρινεν εγενηθη δε καθως συνεκρινεν ημιν ουτως και συνεβη εμε τε αποκατασταθηναι επι την αρχην μου εκεινον δε αποστειλας δε φαραω εκαλεσεν τον ιωσηφ και εξηγαγον αυτον εκ του οχυρωματος και εξυρησαν αυτον και ηλλαξαν την στολην αυτου και ηλθεν προς ειπεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ ενυπνιον εωρακα και ο συγκρινων ουκ εστιν αυτο εγω δε ακηκοα περι σου λεγοντων ακουσαντα σε ενυπνια συγκριναι αποκριθεις δε ιωσηφ τω φαραω ειπεν ανευ του θεου ουκ αποκριθησεται το σωτηριον ελαλησεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ λεγων σταχυες ανεβαινον εν πυθμενι ενι πληρεις και αλλοι δε επτα σταχυες λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι ανεφυοντο εχομενοι και κατεπιον οι επτα σταχυες οι λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι τους επτα σταχυας τους καλους και τους πληρεις ειπα ουν τοις εξηγηταις και ουκ ην ο απαγγελλων και ειπεν ιωσηφ τω φαραω το ενυπνιον φαραω εν εστιν οσα ο θεος ποιει εδειξεν τω αι επτα βοες αι καλαι επτα ετη εστιν και οι επτα σταχυες οι καλοι επτα ετη εστιν το ενυπνιον φαραω εν και αι επτα βοες αι λεπται αι αναβαινουσαι οπισω αυτων επτα ετη εστιν και οι επτα σταχυες οι λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι εσονται επτα ετη το δε ρημα ο ειρηκα φαραω οσα ο θεος ποιει εδειξεν τω ιδου επτα ετη ερχεται ευθηνια πολλη εν παση γη ηξει δε επτα ετη λιμου μετα ταυτα και επιλησονται της πλησμονης εν ολη γη αιγυπτω και αναλωσει ο λιμος την και ουκ επιγνωσθησεται η ευθηνια επι της γης απο του λιμου του εσομενου μετα ταυτα ισχυρος γαρ εσται περι δε του δευτερωσαι το ενυπνιον φαραω δις οτι αληθες εσται το ρημα το παρα του θεου και ταχυνει ο θεος του ποιησαι νυν ουν σκεψαι ανθρωπον φρονιμον και συνετον και καταστησον αυτον επι γης και ποιησατω φαραω και καταστησατω τοπαρχας επι της γης και αποπεμπτωσατωσαν παντα τα γενηματα της γης αιγυπτου των επτα ετων της και συναγαγετωσαν παντα τα βρωματα των επτα ετων των ερχομενων των καλων τουτων και συναχθητω ο σιτος υπο χειρα φαραω βρωματα εν ταις πολεσιν και εσται τα βρωματα πεφυλαγμενα τη γη εις τα επτα ετη του λιμου α εσονται εν γη αιγυπτω και ουκ εκτριβησεται η γη εν τω ηρεσεν δε τα ρηματα εναντιον φαραω και εναντιον παντων των παιδων και ειπεν φαραω πασιν τοις παισιν αυτου μη ευρησομεν ανθρωπον τοιουτον ος εχει πνευμα θεου εν ειπεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ επειδη εδειξεν ο θεος σοι παντα ταυτα ουκ εστιν ανθρωπος φρονιμωτερος και συνετωτερος συ εση επι τω οικω μου και επι τω στοματι σου υπακουσεται πας ο λαος μου πλην τον θρονον υπερεξω σου ειπεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ ιδου καθιστημι σε σημερον επι πασης γης και περιελομενος φαραω τον δακτυλιον απο της χειρος αυτου περιεθηκεν αυτον επι την χειρα ιωσηφ και ενεδυσεν αυτον στολην βυσσινην και περιεθηκεν κλοιον χρυσουν περι τον τραχηλον και ανεβιβασεν αυτον επι το αρμα το δευτερον των αυτου και εκηρυξεν εμπροσθεν αυτου κηρυξ και κατεστησεν αυτον εφ' ολης γης ειπεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ εγω φαραω ανευ σου ουκ εξαρει ουθεις την χειρα αυτου επι παση γη και εκαλεσεν φαραω το ονομα ιωσηφ ψονθομφανηχ και εδωκεν αυτω την ασεννεθ θυγατερα πετεφρη ιερεως ηλιου πολεως αυτω ιωσηφ δε ην ετων τριακοντα οτε εστη εναντιον φαραω βασιλεως αιγυπτου εξηλθεν δε ιωσηφ εκ προσωπου φαραω και διηλθεν πασαν γην και εποιησεν η γη εν τοις επτα ετεσιν της ευθηνιας και συνηγαγεν παντα τα βρωματα των επτα ετων εν οις ην η ευθηνια εν γη αιγυπτου και εθηκεν τα βρωματα εν ταις πολεσιν βρωματα των πεδιων της πολεως των κυκλω αυτης εθηκεν εν και ηυξησεν με ο θεος εν γη ταπεινωσεως παρηλθον δε τα επτα ετη της ευθηνιας α εγενοντο εν γη και ηρξαντο τα επτα ετη του λιμου ερχεσθαι καθα ειπεν ιωσηφ και εγενετο λιμος εν παση τη γη εν δε παση γη Genesis 41 Text (Latin) Post duos annos vidit Pharao somnium. Putabat se stare super fluvium, de quo ascendebant septem boves, pulchræ et crassæ nimis : et pascebantur in locis palustribus. Aliæ quoque septem emergebant de flumine, fœdæ confectæque macie : et pascebantur in ipsa amnis ripa in locis virentibus : devoraveruntque eas, quarum mira species et habitudo corporum erat. Expergefactus Pharao, rursum dormivit, et vidit alterum somnium : septem spicæ pullulabant in culmo uno plenæ atque formosæ : aliæ quoque totidem spicæ tenues, et percussæ uredine oriebantur, devorantes omnium priorum pulchritudinem. Evigilans Pharao post quietem, et facto mane, pavore perterritus, misit ad omnes conjectores Ægypti, cunctosque sapientes, et accersitis narravit somnium, nec erat qui interpretaretur. Tunc demum reminiscens pincernarum magister, ait : Confiteor peccatum meum : iratus rex servis suis, me et magistrum pistorum retrudi jussit in carcerem principis militum : ubi una nocte uterque vidimus somnium præsagum futurorum. Erat ibi puer hebræus, ejusdem ducis militum famulus : cui narrantes somnia, audivimus quidquid postea rei probavit eventus ; ego enim redditus sum officio meo, et ille suspensus est in cruce. Protinus ad regis imperium eductum de carcere Joseph totonderunt : ac veste mutata obtulerunt ei. Cui ille ait : Vidi somnia, nec est qui edisserat : quæ audivi te sapientissime conjicere. Respondit Joseph : Absque me Deus respondebit prospera Pharaoni. Narravit ergo Pharao quod viderat : Putabam me stare super ripam fluminis, et septem boves de amne conscendere, pulchras nimis, et obesis carnibus : quæ in pastu paludis virecta carpebant. Aliæ quoque septem tenues et percussæ uredine, oriebantur e stipula : quæ priorum pulchritudinem devoraverunt. Narravi conjectoribus somnium, et nemo est qui edisserat. Respondit Joseph : Somnium regis unum est : quæ facturus est Deus, ostendit Pharaoni. Septem boves pulchræ, et septem spicæ plenæ, septem ubertatis anni sunt : eamdemque vim somnii comprehendunt. Septem quoque boves tenues atque macilentæ, quæ ascenderunt post eas, et septem spicæ tenues, et vento urente percussæ, septem anni venturæ sunt famis. Qui hoc ordine complebuntur : ecce septem anni venient fertilitatis magnæ in universa terra Ægypti, quos sequentur septem anni alii tantæ sterilitatis, ut oblivioni tradatur cuncta retro abundantia : consumptura est enim fames omnem terram, et ubertatis magnitudinem perditura est inopiæ magnitudo. Quod autem vidisti secundo ad eamdem rem pertinens somnium : firmitatis indicium est, eo quod fiat sermo Dei, et velocius impleatur. Nunc ergo provideat rex virum sapientem et industrium, et præficiat eum terræ Ægypti : qui constituat præpositos per cunctas regiones : et quintam partem fructuum per septem annos fertilitatis, qui jam nunc futuri sunt, congreget in horrea : et omne frumentum sub Pharaonis potestate condatur, serveturque in urbibus. Et præparetur futuræ septem annorum fami, quæ oppressura est Ægyptum, et non consumetur terra inopia. Placuit Pharaoni consilium et cunctis ministris ejus : locutusque est ad eos : Num invenire poterimus talem virum, qui spiritu Dei plenus sit ? Dixit ergo ad Joseph : Quia ostendit tibi Deus omnia quæ locutus es, numquid sapientiorem et consimilem tui invenire potero ? Tu eris super domum meam, et ad tui oris imperium cunctus populus obediet : uno tantum regni solio te præcedam. Dixitque rursus Pharao ad Joseph : Ecce, constitui te super universam terram Ægypti. Tulitque annulum de manu sua, et dedit eum in manu ejus : vestivitque eum stola byssina, et collo torquem auream circumposuit. Fecitque eum ascendere super currum suum secundum, clamante præcone, ut omnes coram eo genu flecterent, et præpositum esse scirent universæ terræ Ægypti. Dixit quoque rex ad Joseph : Ego sum Pharao : absque tuo imperio non movebit quisquam manum aut pedem in omni terra Ægypti. Vertitque nomen ejus, et vocavit eum, lingua ægyptiaca, Salvatorem mundi. Deditque illi uxorem Aseneth filiam Putiphare sacerdotis Heliopoleos. Egressus est itaque Joseph ad terram Ægypti (triginta autem annorum erat quando stetit in conspectu regis Pharaonis), et circuivit omnes regiones Ægypti. Venitque fertilitas septem annorum : et in manipulos redactæ segetes congregatæ sunt in horrea Ægypti. Omnis etiam frugum abundantia in singulis urbibus condita est. Tantaque fuit abundantia tritici, ut arenæ maris coæquaretur, et copia mensuram excederet. Nati sunt autem Joseph filii duo antequam veniret fames : quos peperit ei Aseneth filia Putiphare sacerdotis Heliopoleos. Vocavitque nomen primogeniti Manasses, dicens : Oblivisci me fecit Deus omnium laborum meorum, et domus patris mei. Nomen quoque secundi appellavit Ephraim, dicens : Crescere me fecit Deus in terra paupertatis meæ. Igitur transactis septem ubertatis annis, qui fuerant in Ægypto, cœperunt venire septem anni inopiæ, quos prædixerat Joseph : et in universo orbe fames prævaluit, in cuncta autem terra Ægypti panis erat. Qua esuriente, clamavit populus ad Pharaonem, alimenta petens. Quibus ille respondit : Ite ad Joseph : et quidquid ipse vobis dixerit, facite. Crescebat autem quotidie fames in omni terra : aperuitque Joseph universa horrea, et vendebat Ægyptiis : nam et illos oppresserat fames. Omnesque provinciæ veniebant in Ægyptum, ut emerent escas, et malum inopiæ temperarent.
Genesis 41 Text (KJV) And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow. And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river. And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke. And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good. And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them. And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh. Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day: Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me and the chief baker: And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret. And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged. Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river: And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow: And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and leanfleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness: And the lean and the ill favoured kine did eat up the first seven fat kine: And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. So I awoke. And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good: And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them: And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me. And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do. The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one. And the seven thin and ill favoured kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine. This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh. Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt: And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous. And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years. And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine. And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants. And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt. And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same. And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number. And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On bare unto him. And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house. And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. And the seven years of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended. And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. And the famine was over all the face of the earth: and Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.
