Commentary
The Gospel according to Matthew (Greek: Κατά Μαθθαίον) is the first book of the New Testament. It is one of the four Gospels, containing an account of the birth of Jesus, his ministry and his death and resurrection. It closes with Jesus' Great Commission, where he called his disciples to "go and make disciples of all nations."
Authorship
The book is traditionally thought to be authored by apostle Matthew, one of Jesus' twelve disciples.
Q hypothesis
Date of writing
Due to the book's strong Jewish characteristics, some scholars date his Gospel around the early part of A.D. 50 when the church was largely Jewish. Many other scholars believe that the book was written after the Gospel of Mark and so date the Gospel of Matthew, anywhere between A.D. 65-75.
Purpose
Matthew's main purpose appears to be to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament predictions concerning the Messiah. All of the Gospel writers quote from the Old Testament, however Matthew has nine Old Testament proof-texts that are unique to his Gospel (Matthew 1:22-23; Matthew 2:15; Matthew 2:17-18; Matthew 2:23; Matthew 4:14-16; Matthew 8:17; Matthew 12:17-21; Matthew 13:35; Matthew 27:9-10).
