- Now it happened in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.
- The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller's field highway.
- Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder came out to him.
- Rabshakeh said to them, "Now tell Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, "What confidence is this in which you trust?
- I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
- Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
- But if you tell me, 'We trust in Yahweh our God,' isn't that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar?'"
- Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
- How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
- Have I come up now without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, "Go up against this land, and destroy it."'"
- Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and don't speak to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall."
- But Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?"
- Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
- Thus says the king, 'Don't let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.
- Don't let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, "Yahweh will surely deliver us. This city won't be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."'
- Don't listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, 'Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
- until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
- Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, "Yahweh will deliver us." Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
- Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
- Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'"
- But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king's commandment was, "Don't answer him."
- Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

- ויהי בארבע עשרה שנה למלך חזקיהו עלה סנחריב מלך־אשור על כל־ערי יהודה הבצרות ויתפשם׃
- וישלח מלך־אשור את־רב־שקה מלכיש ירושלמה אל־המלך חזקיהו בחיל כבד ויעמד בתעלת הברכה העליונה במסלת שדה כובס׃
- ויצא אליו אליקים בן־חלקיהו אשר על־הבית ושבנא הספר ויואח בן־אסף המזכיר׃
- ויאמר אליהם רב־שקה אמרו־נא אל־חזקיהו כה־אמר המלך הגדול מלך אשור מה הבטחון הזה אשר בטחת׃
- אמרתי אך־דבר־שפתים עצה וגבורה למלחמה עתה על־מי בטחת כי מרדת בי׃
- הנה בטחת על־משענת הקנה הרצוץ הזה על־מצרים אשר יסמך איש עליו ובא בכפו ונקבה כן פרעה מלך־מצרים לכל־הבטחים עליו׃
- וכי־תאמר אלי אל־יהוה אלהינו בטחנו הלוא־הוא אשר הסיר חזקיהו את־במתיו ואת־מזבחתיו ויאמר ליהודה ולירושלם לפני המזבח הזה תשתחוו׃
- ועתה התערב נא את־אדני המלך אשור ואתנה לך אלפים סוסים אם־תוכל לתת לך רכבים עליהם׃
- ואיך תשיב את פני פחת אחד עבדי אדני הקטנים ותבטח לך על־מצרים לרכב ולפרשים׃
- ועתה המבלעדי יהוה עליתי על־הארץ הזאת להשחיתה יהוה אמר אלי עלה אל־הארץ הזאת והשחיתה׃
- ויאמר אליקים ושבנא ויואח אל־רב־שקה דבר־נא אל־עבדיך ארמית כי שמעים אנחנו ואל־תדבר אלינו יהודית באזני העם אשר על־החומה׃
- ויאמר רב־שקה האל אדניך ואליך שלחני אדני לדבר את־הדברים האלה הלא על־האנשים הישבים על־החומה לאכל את־ ולשתות את־ עםכם׃
- ויעמד רב־שקה ויקרא בקול־גדול יהודית ויאמר שמעו את־דברי המלך הגדול מלך אשור׃
- כה אמר המלך אל־ישא לכם חזקיהו כי לא־יוכל להציל אתכם׃
- ואל־יבטח אתכם חזקיהו אל־יהוה לאמר הצל יצילנו יהוה לא תנתן העיר הזאת ביד מלך אשור׃
- אל־תשמעו אל־חזקיהו ס כי כה אמר המלך אשור עשו־אתי ברכה וצאו אלי ואכלו איש־גפנו ואיש תאנתו ושתו איש מי־בורו׃
- עד־באי ולקחתי אתכם אל־ארץ כארצכם ארץ דגן ותירוש ארץ לחם וכרמים׃
- פן־יסית אתכם חזקיהו לאמר יהוה יצילנו ההצילו אלהי הגוים איש את־ארצו מיד מלך אשור׃
- איה אלהי חמת וארפד איה אלהי ספרוים וכי־הצילו את־שמרון מידי׃
- מי בכל־אלהי הארצות האלה אשר־הצילו את־ארצם מידי כי־יציל יהוה את־ירושלם מידי׃
- ויחרישו ולא־ענו אתו דבר כי־מצות המלך היא לאמר לא תענהו׃
- ויבא אליקים בן־חלקיהו אשר־על־הבית ושבנא הסופר ויואח בן־אסף המזכיר אל־חזקיהו קרועי בגדים ויגידו לו את דברי רב־שקה׃ ס

- Et factum est in quartodecimo anno regis Ezechiæ, ascendit Sennacherib, rex Assyriorum, super omnes civitates Juda munitas, et cepit eas.
- Et misit rex Assyriorum Rabsacen de Lachis in Jerusalem, ad regem Ezechiam in manu gravi : et stetit in aquæductu piscinæ superioris in via Agri fullonis.
- Et egressus est ad eum Eliacim, filius Helciæ, qui erat super domum, et Sobna scriba, et Joahe filius Asaph, a commentariis.
- Et dixit ad eos Rabsaces : Dicite Ezechiæ : Hæc dicit rex magnus, rex Assyriorum : Quæ est ista fiducia qua confidis ?
- aut quo consilio vel fortitudine rebellare disponis ? super quem habes fiduciam, quia recessisti a me ?
- Ecce confidis super baculum arundineum confractum istum, super Ægyptum ; cui si innixus fuerit homo, intrabit in manum ejus, et perforabit eam : sic Pharao, rex Ægypti, omnibus qui confidunt in eo.
- Quod si responderis mihi : In Domino Deo nostro confidimus ; nonne ipse est cujus abstulit Ezechias excelsa et altaria, et dixit Judæ et Jerusalem : Coram altari isto adorabitis ?
- Et nunc trade te domino meo, regi Assyriorum, et dabo tibi duo millia equorum, nec poteris ex te præbere ascensores eorum :
- et quomodo sustinebis faciem judicis unius loci ex servis domini mei minoribus ? Quod si confidis in Ægypto, in quadrigis et in equitibus,
- et nunc numquid sine Domino ascendi ad terram istam, ut disperderem eam ? Dominus dixit ad me : Ascende super terram istam, et disperde eam.
- Et dixit Eliacim, et Sobna, et Joahe, ad Rabsacen : Loquere ad servos tuos syra lingua ; intelligimus enim ; ne loquaris ad nos judaice in auribus populi qui est super murum.
- Et dixit ad eos Rabsaces : Numquid ad dominum tuum et ad te misit me dominus meus, ut loquerer omnia verba ista ? et non potius ad viros qui sedent in muro, ut comedant stercora sua, et bibant urinam pedum suorum vobiscum ?
- Et stetit Rabsaces, et clamavit voce magna judaice, et dixit : Audite verba regis magni, regis Assyriorum !
- Hæc dicit rex : Non seducat vos Ezechias, quia non poterit eruere vos.
- Et non vobis tribuat fiduciam Ezechias super Domino, dicens : Eruens liberabit nos Dominus : non dabitur civitas ista in manu regis Assyriorum.
- Nolite audire Ezechiam ; hæc enim dicit rex Assyriorum : Facite mecum benedictionem, et egredimini ad me, et comedite unusquisque vineam suam, et unusquisque ficum suam, et bibite unusquisque aquam cisternæ suæ,
- donec veniam, et tollam vos ad terram quæ est ut terra vestra, terram frumenti et vini, terram panum et vinearum.
- Nec conturbet vos Ezechias, dicens : Dominus liberabit nos. Numquid liberaverunt dii gentium unusquisque terram suam de manu regis Assyriorum ?
- Ubi est deus Emath et Arphad ? ubi est deus Sepharvaim ? numquid liberaverunt Samariam de manu mea ?
- Quis est ex omnibus diis terrarum istarum qui eruerit terram suam de manu mea, ut eruat Dominus Jerusalem de manu mea ?
- Et siluerunt, et non responderunt ei verbum. Mandaverat enim rex, dicens : Ne respondeatis ei.
- Et ingressus est Eliacim, filius Helciæ, qui erat super domum, et Sobna scriba, et Joahe filius Asaph, a commentariis, ad Ezechiam, scissis vestibus, et nuntiaverunt ei verba Rabsacis.

- Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
- And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.
- Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.
- And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
- I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
- Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
- But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?

- But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
- Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
- Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
- Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
- Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
- Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
