In brief: The modern day country of Israel is a small country in the Middle East, which was set up after the Second World War to be a home to the remaining Jews. It was established in the land of Palestine where Arab people, mostly Muslims, and some Christians had lived for generations. The name Israel comes from the Old Testament - the patriach Jacob was renamed Israel by God, and from his twelve sons, the Jewish nation arose, known as Israel.
