History of Jehovah's Witnesses
The Jehovah's Witnesses had their beginnings in the late 1870's when a small group under the leadership of sincere people led by Charles T. Russell started began to question a Bible study group. As they were studying the Bible, they believed that they had found certain things that were in conflict with number of accepted Christian doctrines, including the Trinity and Hell.
Beliefs
The Jehovah's Witnesses teach the following as core doctrine, basing them certain passages. Some of these interpretations, in particular, Jesus as a created being, are in direct conflict with orthodox Christianity.
* There is only one true God (Isaiah 43:10; Isaiah 44:6; John 17:3; 1 Corinthians 8:5-6)
* God is named Jehovah (or Yahweh) (Exodus 3:15-16; Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18)
* Christ died for all mankind (Matthew 20:28; 1 Timothy 2:5, 6; 1 Peter 2:24)
* Christ only had to die once for all mankind (Hebrews 9:25-28)
* Christ was raised from the dead as a spirit (1 Corinthians 15:45; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 Peter 3:18)
* We are living in the Last Days (Matthew 24:3-14; 2 Timothy 3:1-5)
* There is only one true Christian religion and sects are completely forbidden (Matthew 7:13, 14; Ephesians 4:4, 5; 1 Corinthians 1:10)
* The soul ceases to exist at death (Ecclesiastes 9:5; Ezekiel 18:4)
* The hope for the dead is a resurrection back to Earth (John 5:28, 29; Acts 24:15)
* Only 144,000 go to heaven (Luke 12:32; Revelation 14:1-3)
* The Earth will never be destroyed (Ecclesiastes 1:4; Isaiah 45:18)
* The righteous who survive Armageddon and the resurrected ones will live on Earth forever (Psalm 37:11, 29; Matthew 5:5)
* Satan is the ruler of the world and is blinding people from the truth (John 14:30; 1 John 5:19; 2 Corinthians 4:3, 4)
* An apostasy made the true Biblical teachings be done away with for a period of time (Matthew 13:24-30; Matthew 24:11; Acts 20:29, 30; 2 Timothy 4:3, 4)
