  1. Job again took up his parable, and said,
  2. "Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;
  3. when his lamp shone on my head, and by his light I walked through darkness,
  4. as I was in the ripeness of my days, when the friendship of God was in my tent,
  5. when the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were around me,
  6. when my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured out streams of oil for me,
  7. when I went forth to the city gate, when I prepared my seat in the street.
  8. The young men saw me and hid themselves. The aged rose up and stood.
  9. The princes refrained from talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
  10. The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.
  11. For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it commended me:
  12. Because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had none to help him,
  13. the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
  14. I put on righteousness, and it clothed me. My justice was as a robe and a diadem.
  15. I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame.
  16. I was a father to the needy. The cause of him who I didn't know, I searched out.
  17. I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.
  18. Then I said, 'I shall die in my own house, I shall number my days as the sand.
  19. My root is spread out to the waters. The dew lies all night on my branch.
  20. My glory is fresh in me. My bow is renewed in my hand.'
  21. "Men listened to me, waited, and kept silence for my counsel.
  22. After my words they didn't speak again. My speech fell on them.
  23. They waited for me as for the rain. Their mouths drank as with the spring rain.
  24. I smiled on them when they had no confidence. They didn't reject the light of my face.
  25. I chose out their way, and sat as chief. I lived as a king in the army, as one who comforts the mourners.

  1. ויסף איוב שאת משלו ויאמר׃
  2. מי־יתנני כירחי־קדם כימי אלוה ישמרני׃
  3. בהלו נרו עלי ראשי לאורו אלך חשך׃
  4. כאשר הייתי בימי חרפי בסוד אלוה עלי אהלי׃
  5. בעוד שדי עמדי סביבותי נערי׃
  6. ברחץ הליכי בחמה וצור יצוק עמדי פלגי־שמן׃
  7. בצאתי שער עלי־קרת ברחוב אכין מושבי׃
  8. ראוני נערים ונחבאו וישישים קמו עמדו׃
  9. שרים עצרו במלים וכף ישימו לפיהם׃
  10. קול־נגידים נחבאו ולשונם לחכם דבקה׃
  11. כי אזן שמעה ותאשרני ועין ראתה ותעידני׃
  12. כי־אמלט עני משוע ויתום ולא־עזר לו׃
  13. ברכת אבד עלי תבא ולב אלמנה ארןן׃
  14. צדק לבשתי וילבשני כמעיל וצניף משפטי׃
  15. עינים הייתי לעור ורגלים לפסח אני׃
  16. אב אנכי לאביונים ורב לא־ידעתי אחקרהו׃
  17. ואשברה מתלעות עול ומשניו אשליך טרף׃
  18. ואמר עם־קני אגוע וכחול ארבה ימים׃
  19. שרשי פתוח אלי־מים וטל ילין בקצירי׃
  20. כבודי חדש עמדי וקשתי בידי תחליף׃
  21. לי־שמעו ויחלו וידמו למו עצתי׃
  22. אחרי דברי לא ישנו ועלימו תטף מלתי׃
  23. ויחלו כמטר לי ופיהם פערו למלקוש׃
  24. אשחק אלהם לא יאמינו ואור פני לא יפילון׃
  25. אבחר דרכם ואשב ראש ואשכון כמלך בגדוד כאשר אבלים ינחם׃

  1. ετι δε προσθεις ιωβ ειπεν τω
  2. τις αν με θειη κατα μηνα εμπροσθεν ημερων ων με ο θεος
  3. ως οτε ηυγει ο λυχνος αυτου υπερ κεφαλης μου οτε τω φωτι αυτου επορευομην εν
  4. οτε ημην επιβριθων οδοις οτε ο θεος επισκοπην εποιειτο του οικου
  5. οτε ημην υλωδης λιαν κυκλω δε μου οι
  6. οτε εχεοντο μου αι οδοι βουτυρω τα δε ορη μου εχεοντο
  7. οτε εξεπορευομην ορθριος εν πολει εν δε πλατειαις ετιθετο μου ο
  8. ιδοντες με νεανισκοι εκρυβησαν πρεσβυται δε παντες
  9. αδροι δε επαυσαντο λαλουντες δακτυλον επιθεντες επι
  10. οι δε ακουσαντες εμακαρισαν με και γλωσσα αυτων τω λαρυγγι αυτων
  11. οτι ους ηκουσεν και εμακαρισεν με οφθαλμος δε ιδων με
  12. διεσωσα γαρ πτωχον εκ χειρος δυναστου και ορφανω ω ουκ ην βοηθος
  13. ευλογια απολλυμενου επ' εμε ελθοι στομα δε χηρας με
  14. δικαιοσυνην δε ενεδεδυκειν ημφιασαμην δε κριμα ισα
  15. οφθαλμος ημην τυφλων πους δε
  16. εγω ημην πατηρ αδυνατων δικην δε ην ουκ ηδειν
  17. συνετριψα δε μυλας αδικων εκ δε μεσου των οδοντων αυτων αρπαγμα
  18. ειπα δε η ηλικια μου γηρασει ωσπερ στελεχος φοινικος πολυν χρονον
  19. η ριζα μου διηνοικται επι υδατος και δροσος αυλισθησεται εν τω θερισμω
  20. η δοξα μου καινη μετ' εμου και το τοξον μου εν χειρι αυτου
  21. εμου ακουσαντες προσεσχον εσιωπησαν δε επι τη εμη
  22. επι δε τω εμω ρηματι ου προσεθεντο περιχαρεις δε εγινοντο οποταν αυτοις
  23. ωσπερ γη διψωσα προσδεχομενη τον υετον ουτως ουτοι την εμην
  24. εαν γελασω προς αυτους ου μη πιστευσωσιν και φως του προσωπου μου ουκ
  25. εξελεξαμην οδον αυτων και εκαθισα αρχων και κατεσκηνουν ωσει βασιλευς εν μονοζωνοις ον τροπον παθεινους

  1. Addidit quoque Job, assumens parabolam suam, et dixit :
  2. Quis mihi tribuat ut sim juxta menses pristinos, secundum dies quibus Deus custodiebat me ?
  3. quando splendebat lucerna ejus super caput meum, et ad lumen ejus ambulabam in tenebris :
  4. sicut fui in diebus adolescentiæ meæ, quando secreto Deus erat in tabernaculo meo :
  5. quando erat Omnipotens mecum, et in circuitu meo pueri mei :
  6. quando lavabam pedes meos butyro, et petra fundebat mihi rivos olei :
  7. quando procedebam ad portam civitatis, et in platea parabant cathedram mihi.
  8. Videbant me juvenes, et abscondebantur : et senes assurgentes stabant.
  9. Principes cessabant loqui, et digitum superponebant ori suo.
  10. Vocem suam cohibebant duces, et lingua eorum gutturi suo adhærebat.
  11. Auris audiens beatificabat me, et oculus videns testimonium, reddebat mihi :
  12. eo quod liberassem pauperem vociferantem, et pupillum cui non esset adjutor.
  13. Benedictio perituri super me veniebat, et cor viduæ consolatus sum.
  14. Justitia indutus sum, et vestivi me, sicut vestimento et diademate, judicio meo.
  15. Oculus fui cæco, et pes claudo.
  16. Pater eram pauperum, et causam quam nesciebam diligentissime investigabam.
  17. Conterebam molas iniqui, et de dentibus illius auferebam prædam.
  18. Dicebamque : In nidulo meo moriar, et sicut palma multiplicabo dies.
  19. Radix mea aperta est secus aquas, et ros morabitur in messione mea.
  20. Gloria mea semper innovabitur, et arcus meus in manu mea instaurabitur.
  21. Qui me audiebant, expectabant sententiam, et intenti tacebant ad consilium meum.
  22. Verbis meis addere nihil audebant, et super illos stillabat eloquium meum.
  23. Expectabant me sicut pluviam, et os suum aperiebant quasi ad imbrem serotinum.
  24. Siquando ridebam ad eos, non credebant, et lux vultus mei non cadebat in terram.
  25. Si voluissem ire ad eos, sedebam primus : cumque sederem quasi rex, circumstante exercitu, eram tamen mœrentium consolator.

  3. When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
  4. As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
  5. When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
  6. When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
  7. When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
  8. The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.
  9. The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
  10. The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
  11. When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
  12. Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
  13. The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
  14. I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
  15. I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.

  21. Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
  22. After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
  23. And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
  24. If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
  25. I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.
