Lazarus was a close friend of [[Jesus]] who lived in [[Bethany]]. The story of him being raised from the dead by Jesus is told in [[John 11]] in the [[New Testament]].
The miracle, the longest coherent narrative in John aside from the Passion, is the climax of John's "signs" and leads directly to the decision of [[Caiaphas]] and the [[Sanhedrin]] to kill Jesus. Caiaphas utters the prophetics words "It is better one man should die for the people, than that the whole nation perish" ([[John 11:50]])
