Main article

Lazarus was a close friend of Jesus who lived in Bethany. The story of him being raised from the dead by Jesus is told in John 11 in the New Testament.

The story of his death and brining back to life is told in John 11. The sisters Martha and Mary sent news of his illness ot Jesus, but Jesus, knowing of Lazarus' death, waited a number of days before going to visit. On meeting Jesus, Martha weeping to Jesus says that if only Jesus had arrived earlier, her brother would not have died. Jesus responds with the famous line in John 11:25, "I am the resurrection, and the life...". The story ends with the Jesus calling Lazarus out of the tomb, and Lazarus walking out, alive!

The story also contains the shortest verse, "Jesus wept" - John 11:35.

Following the miracle, many Jews were convinced of Jesus' divinity after visiting Lazarus. No more is said about of Lazarus himself.

The miracle, the longest coherent narrative in John aside from the Passion, is the climax of John's "signs" and leads directly to the decision of Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin to kill Jesus. Caiaphas utters the prophetics words "It is better one man should die for the people, than that the whole nation perish" (John 11:50)
