Minnesota is a state in the Midwestern region of the [[United States]]. Its population of over five million is primarily of northern European descent, with the principal minorities being Native Americans descended from the original inhabitants, Hispanics, African Americans, and recent immigrant communities of Somalis and Hmongs. Around a quarter of the population are [[Roman Catholic]], and another quarter [[Lutheran]]. Known as the "Land of Lakes" because of its over 15,000 lakes, a play on the name produces "Land of Lutherans". 14% of the population consider themselves [[non-religious]].

Minnesota was admitted to the Union as the thirty-second state on May 11, 1858. The state's name comes from a Dakota word for "sky-tinted water"
===Geography===
Minnesota is the northernmost state apart from Alaska; its isolated Northwest Angle in Lake of the Woods is the only part of the 48 contiguous states lying north of the 49th Parallel. The state is part of the U.S. region known as the Upper Midwest. The state shares a Lake Superior water border with Michigan and Wisconsin on the northeast; the remainder of the eastern border is with Wisconsin. Iowa is to the south, North Dakota and South Dakota to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba to the north. With 86,943 square miles (225,181 km²), or approximately 2.25% of the United States, Minnesota is the twelfth-largest state.
