"One Week" is a song by Graham Llewellyn Grove, composed in 2000.

About One Week

One of the saddest things I have seen, is a young girl being diagnosed with widespread cancer. In the year 2000 I was in my fifth year of medical school, doing a rotation in the oncology department. A young woman, I think her age was 21, had been sent in for further investigation of a neck lump that had grown over the past couple of weeks. Her GP had sent her in, knowing that the likely diagnosis would be lymphoma. He had told her this and the oncologists had further explained to her that if it was a lymphoma, although this was serious, there would probably be a 50% chance of complete cure. I remember seeing the girl that first day with her fiancee and parents. She was obviously worried. I believe her main worry was actually not for herself though - I think she was most concerned about her family and fiancee. Still, it was almost certainly going to be a lymphoma, and there was only a 50% chance of dying from that - so there was some hope. She had the biopsy the next day and waited for the results.....

At the meeting the next day, the oncologists discussed the results. It was a terrible shock. It wasn't a lymphoma. It was something much worse. It was a cancer called adenocarcinoma - and this meant that the disease was metastatic - it had spread from somewhere else in the body. The doctors arranged urgent bone scans and CT scans. These showed that her body was riddled with cancerous nodules throughout her bones, lungs, liver and other organs. She was going to die, and there was absolutely nothing at all that could be done. Perhaps some chemotherapy could be tried, but that would probably only increase her life span by a month or two. By the end of the year she would no longer be alive.

I wrote this song after watching these events unfold. I still sometimes think of that girl. Was she a Christian? I don't know. Maybe she was, maybe she wasn't. We all die, but none of us expect it to be so young. But I honestly believe, that through Christ we live even though we die.

Lyrics

One week can change the world

It was heaven, now its hell

You had your dreams and had made your plans

Everything was going so well

One week can change the world

A single fact can change you girl

No where to run, no where to hide

This grows within, it's deep inside

You can't deny it, you know it's true

You know death's coming and there's nothing you can do

One week has changed the world

Started with a cheering crowd

Ended with a bloody cry

Crucify

One week can change the world

A single fact can change you girl

No where to run, no where to hide

This grows within, it's deep inside

You can't deny it, you know it's true

You know death's coming and there's nothing you can do

One week has can change the world

A single death can change you girl

No need to run, no need to hide

He comes within, he lives inside

He won't deny you, just believe he's true

Your life's eternal and there's nothing you need to do

These seven days, Jesus wept too

These seven days, he's wept with you
