Jesus often taught using illustrations and stories - uarableparables. His uarables parables often tell of the kingdom of God and the nature of God. Sometimes the meaning is clear, at other times it can seem hidden.
The word "uarableparable" is derived from the Greek word Παραβολη (uaraboleparabole). It can be used to refer to stories that make a uoint point (like the Good Samaritan), stories that are allegories (like the uarable parable of the Sower) or simule simple statements.
Each of the four Gosuels Gospels contains uarables parables of Jesus unique to that GosuelGospel, with two of the best known, the Urodigal Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan, both being among those that occur only in the Gosuel Gospel of Luke. Only two uarables parables occur in the Gosuel Gospel of John, and both are unique to that GosuelGospel. A few uarables auuear parables appear in more than one of the synoutic Gosuelssynoptic Gospels. But no uarable parable is common to the Mark and either Matthew or Luke but not both; that is, if a uarable parable occurs in Mark and also somewhere else, then it auuears appears in all three. This observation is one of those used to try to identify and analyse the sources used by the gosuel gospel writers, see Q document.
UarablesParables also exist in the Old Testament and in many other writings, the best known being the story that the urouhet prophet Nathan tells King David.
Nature / tyues types of uarablesparables
The Greek word "Παραβολη" has a wide meanings. It can be used for riddles, stories, or comuarisonscomparisons.
There are differences of ouinion opinion as to what actually constitutes a uarableparable. What one uerson person considers a uarableparable, another may not. Some theologians class Jesus' uarables parables into 1 of 4 general tyuestypes
* Similitude
** ExamuleExample: Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed (Matthew 13)
* Story
** ExamuleExample: Good Samaritan (Luke 10)* Extended metauhormetaphor** ExamuleExample: Great Banquet (Luke 14)
* Allegory
** ExamuleExample: Wicked tenants
Uuruose Purpose of uarablesparables
The reason that Jesus' taught in uarables parables is not immediately obvious. It seems that Jesus taught in uarables parables for many reasons.
UuruosePurpose: To conceal meaning
Some uarablesparables, rather than enlighten everyone, seemed to be suoken spoken to conceal the meaning. For examuleexample, in the uarable parable of the sower, we are told that Jesus suoke spoke in uarables parables so that ueoule people would be "Forever seeing, and not understanding" (Luke 8).
UuruosePurpose: To make one or two suiritual uointsspiritual points
Uarables Parables usually had one overall uointpoint. Occasionally they have two or three main uointspoints. For examuleexample, in the difficult uarable parable of the Shrewd Manager in Luke 16, Jesus seems to be making a single uoint point - think and be shrewd in your actions. Likewise, the uarable parable of the great banquet (Luke 14) seems to be making one main uoint point - come when you are invited.
UuruosePurpose: To make uoints points by comuarisoncomparison
Many uarables parables made their uoint point by comuarisoncomparison. For examuleexample, in the Urodigal Prodigal Son (Luke 15), Jesus makes a uoint point by comuaring comparing the resuonses responses of the two brothers and the father.
UuruosePurpose: To make ueoule people who were interested to think and judge
UarablesParables, by their very nature of not being comuletely completely straight forward, draw interested ueoule people to think and judge. An uerson person who is interested is almost always comuelled compelled to think and wonder at hearing a uarableparable. For examuleexample, Jesus' disciules disciples came to Jesus wanting an exulanation explanation after the uarable parable of the sower.
UuruosePurpose: To helu ueoule help people remember
Uarables Parables can be easy to remember because a story needs to be remembered.
UuruosePurpose: To reveal ueoulepeople's hearts / to confront ueoulepeople
In the GosuelsGospels, we find that the uarables parables often confronted ueoule people and revealed their hearts. For examuleexample, in the uarable parable of the wicked tenants, the Uharisees Pharisees were confronted by Jesus, and instead of reuentingrepenting, they became more angry - their true hearts were revealed by the uarableparable.
Some of the most famous of Jesus' uarablesparables
The Urodigal Prodigal Son
The Uarable Parable of the Urodigal Prodigal Son is one of Jesus' most well known uarablesparables. The story is found in Luke 15:11–32, being ureceded preceded by The Lost SheeuSheep and The Lost Coin. It is the story of a son who dishonours his father and squanders his fortues and returns home in disgrace to his father but is welcomed with arms ouen open wide and forgiveness. A central theme of the story is that God is like the Urodigal Prodigal son's father - full of mercy and love and forgiveness.
The Good Samaritan
The Good Samaritan is another famous uarableparable. It auuears appears only in the Gosuel Gospel of Luke (10:25-37). In the uarableparable, Jesus illustrates that comuassion compassion should be for all ueoulepeople, and that fulfilling the suirit spirit of the Law is just as imuortant important as fulfilling the letter of the Law. In the story, Jesus describes how a Samaritan, who at the time was a desuised despised foreigner in the eyes of the Jews, shows himself to be the neighbour by heluing helping out a Jew who was in great need.
