The Eastern Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople was originally at the level of an archbishop in the Roman Catholic Church, with each archbishop an equal with the bishop of Rome, the pope, being a first among equals. However, the schism of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches caused the patriarch in Constantinople to become the analogy to the pope in the Roman Catholic Church.
