Text

The resurrection of Christ is recorded in each of the gospels. It can be found at Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24 and John 20-21.

Old Testament

Theology of the resurrection

Teaching us that this is part of the gospel in 1 Corinthians 5:4, the Apostle Paul also taught that if the resurrection did not occur, then Christian preaching is useless, the faith of Christians is useless (1 Corinthians 15:14) and Christians are yet in their sins (1 Corinthians 15:17). Elsewhere Paul tells us that Christ's resurrection was involved in the justification of believers (Romans 4:25).

The belief that Jesus Christ was resurrected physically is vindicated by Christ's own words in Luke 24:39

See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones, as you see that I have."

Quotes

Sir Norman Anderson, O.B.E., Q.C., LL.D., F.B.A., "The Evidence for the Resurrection", IVP, 1950.

Paul, in the fifteenth chapter of his Epistle to the Corinthians, gives a detailed list of several resurrection appearances. Now there is scarcely a scholar who has doubted the genuineness of 1 Corinthians, and its date is generally accepted as about 56 A.D. But the apostle writes that he had not only previously given his readers this information orally (i.e., in 49 A.D.), but had himself 'received' it, presumably from those who were apostles before him. This may take us back to 40 A.D. or to within some ten years of the crucifixion.... Paul tells us that in 56 A.D. the majority of some 500 original witnesses were still alive....

The resurrection shows that God has made the crucified both Lord and Christ. At the right hand of the Father, Jesus rules until the day that he will come to restore and renew all things. With the resurrection of Jesus and his entrance into glory, a new age has begun.
