In the Bible, the word saint comes from the Greek word hagion, which means one who has been set apart or made holy by faith in Christ. In this context the word "saint" is not a description of a special class of Christian or a reference to one who is deemed especially holy, but is a simple reference to all Christians. In Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy the term saint is also a title which is given to deceased Christians who died for their faith as martyrs and/or were especially holy and performed miracles. Since the high middle ages a specific process of canonisation was implemented in the Catholic church.
