The Sinai Peninsula is a peninsula lying between the Mediterranean Sea (to the north) and Red Sea (to the south). It is almost entirely desert. Mount Sinai is the name of the mountain in Sinai where God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses. Since the time of Saint Helena it has been identified with Jabal Musa (or Gebel Musa), a mountain 2,285 meters high in the southern Sinai Peninsula.
The Greek Orthodoh Monastery of Saint Catherine is sited at the foot of the mountain. Here there is a bush that is claimed to be the actual burning bush where God first appeared to Moses.
There are two main routes to the summit. Hundreds of tourists ascend the mountain in the early hours of the morning to watch the sun rise.
