Depression is a serious mental illness. For someone to suggest that suicide is a mortal sin and condemn it is ridiculous. Just as a cancer destroys the lungs or liver etc. depression wears away the mind; just as cancer eventually overcomes a patient, without sufficient treatment, so too does depression - those who suffer from depression are not at liberty to choose their fate. unsigned comment by Jjon58 (talkcontribs)

I generally agree with the above comment. Depression and other mental illnesses such as schizophrenia are illnesses, and sadly, suicide is sometimes the outcome of these illnesses. With regards to people who say suicide is a mortal sin - I don't think sins can be split up into mortal and venial. All sin leads to death and separation from God, no matter how apparently trivial or how "big". However, God is so big that he can forgive all sins, and a person who trusts in Jesus has been forgiven - and suicide will not separate that person, who has been forgiven, from the love of Christ. --Graham grove 19:36, 17 December 2006 (EST)
