It might be better to say that the protestant churches split away from the Roman Catholic Church based on differences in opinion of doctrine, especially the issue of "Justification by faith '''ALONE'''" versus "Justificattion by faith '''INCLUDING''' works".
Catholic doctrine does not teach that faith '''AND''' works are necessary but that faith has to include works.
