Chapter 7 records the disobedience of Achan. [[God]] told Joshua that the spoils of Jericho The Gibeonites were consecrated found to Him be neighbors and were to be placed in His treasuryenemies, among those who should have been destroyed. But Achan disobeyed The result was [[GodIsrael]]'s instructions. He thought he could hide his disobedience to the [[sinLord]]. And because an "accursed thing" was in the camp, [[God]] could not dwell with His people. This caused their defeat at Ai. Achan's disobedience was discovered and exposedenemies numbered among them. Now that Though the nation has been sanctified Gibeonites were given menial tasks, being made woodcutters and Achan's [[sin]] judgedwater carriers, [[God]] can again lead His people to [[victory]]. Chapter 8 covers the destruction fact remained that they were enemies of Ai. The first defeat was used to good advantage, for now the people of Ai were confident they could overcome [[IsraelIsraelites]] again. Note also in this chapter that [[God]] allowed the people to take the cattle and the spoil from Ai. If Achan had only waited a few days he would have had all the wealth he could have carried!

The heathen tribes of Canaan were divided into many little "nations," with key cities as their centers. They usually fought each other, but when [[IsraelGod]]'s conquest people arrived the little nations united to oppose [[Israel]]. However, a group of the mighty city Hivites, a little-known ethnic group of JerichoPalestine, covered in chapter 6decided to try diplomacy rather than war. Their capital city was Gibeon, is an illustration located five miles northwest of several practical spiritual truths. [[GodJerusalem]]'s only requirement on the road to Joppa. They pretended to be friends of the [[Israel]]ites was that they wait. They lied to them, saying their wineskins had become old and worn on their long journey, their bread moldy, obeyand their sandals worn. The [[Israel]]ites believed them and made a treaty with them.
